Kindergarten Orientation-August 17th
On the first day of school, Aug. 17, 2022, we invite all kindergarten students and families to take part in Kindergarten Orientation Day. The day will have a modified schedule, which will allow kindergarten teachers to meet with students and families in small groups throughout the day and provide a comforting transition to school.
During the orientation, you and your child will:
Meet your teacher
Become familiar with classroom routines and expectations
Get to know new friends and families
Take first day of school pictures
Calm any kindergarten fears or anxieties (for students and parents)
Families are asked to sign up for one session, each lasting approximately one hour.
Please note on Aug. 17 there will not be bus service or lunch provided for kindergarten students. Aug. 18 will be a regular school day for all students.
We look forward to seeing your family on Aug. 17 at Kindergarten Orientation Day!
Arrival and Dismissal
Students can arrive to school as a walker, car rider, bus rider, daycare transportation or Ycare.
The doors open at 8:20 am. No students can arrive prior to 8:20 am unless they are signed up for Ycare (information below).
Bus information
The Durham bus company is a separate entity from the Blue Valley School District.
If you are desiring to have your student use the bus for transportation you need to go through the bus company Durham School Services to register your student for the bus.
On the website you can also register for bus alerts once you learn what bus route your student will be on. Durham communicates through email about pick up and drop off time and location.
Ycare
Ycare is before and after school care that is offered by the YMCA at Prairie Star. It is a separate entity from the school district. It is available starting at 7 am, and the latest pick up is 6 pm. You must sign up and register prior to school starting.
You can sign up here: https://kansascityymca.org/programs/before-and-after-school/y-club-locations/blue-valley
School dismisses at 3:40 pm.
We will ask you in the fall how you want your student dismissed; walker, car rider, bus, Ycare, or daycare bus.
Traffic Pattern for PSE
Thank you for helping us maintain a safe and efficient arrival and dismissal process.
Community Snacks at PSE
Students will all have an opportunity to eat a snack during their school day. We plan for students to eat their snack right before recess. We are hoping this will help reduce the exposure and risk for all students.
The decision on community snacks is still a go at PSE due to our life threatening allergy concerns. Community snacks are purchased communally by our families who provide them for teachers. All community snacks must be pre-packaged this year, we will make sure it is on the nut safer list before the teacher hands out the snack.
Lunch at PSE
Lunch Visitors: If you would like to visit the lunchroom during your child's lunch, you are welcome to join us starting Monday, March 7th. This is a chance for you to come during special occasions or when your schedule allows. The students are always so excited to have a lunch visitor. Please don’t all show up next Monday. We don’t have that many seats. :) Here are some guidelines we ask you to follow:
- You will need your government-issued photo ID to enter the building
- Check-in at the office and obtain a visitor's sticker
- If a grandparent, aunt, uncle, etc., want to visit for lunch, they will need to be listed as an Emergency Contact in our student information system or not be allowed to enter the building. Please call the office to add people before the visit
- If a visitor brings food, it can only be shared with your student
- We will have a visitor's table in the lunchroom for you and your student to sit and eat
- Check out at the office after your student's lunch

Classroom Volunteers and Visitors:
Volunteer Opportunities: Staff will begin to request parents for mystery readers, upcoming special activities (specials, field day, etc.), field trips, or shelving library books. We truly appreciate the support we receive from our parent community. Please make sure you sign in and out with the front office to obtain a visitor's badge/sticker.
BUZZ-IN ENTRY SYSTEM
We use a buzz-in entry system, which adds another layer of security as we work to foster a safe and positive learning environment. All exterior doors will be locked during the school day. Family members and visitors who arrive during the school day will use the buzz-in entry system. Adults will be asked to use the outside intercom and security camera to show their ID and share the purpose of their visit before being “buzzed in.” Once inside, adults will continue to sign in at the office and wear a visitor badge while in the school.
