September in the Library
2017
Spotlight on: Banned Books Week
For September the spotlight was on Banned Books Week, which ran from September 24-30. Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom we have to read! All over the country, and the world, books are challenged or banned in schools and public libraries. Appreciate that you can read practically anything you want! Check out the American Library Associates website for more information.
Classes in the library
Ms. Lechan got to see the whole school in September! All students came in with their English classes over the course of the month. 6th grade students learned how to use the library catalog to search for books and how to navigate the library. 7th and 8th grade students heard book talks and then checked out a book for independent reading. Let's keep DMS' awesome culture of reading strong!
Book Reviews
Amazon Adventure: How Tiny Fish Are Saving the World's Largest Rainforest by Sy Montgomery
Considered the “lungs of the world,” the Amazon provides a full fifth of the world’s oxygen, and every year unsustainable human practices destroy 2.7 million acres. What can be done to help? That’s where Project Piaba comes in.
Join the award-winning author Sy Montgomery and the photographer Keith Ellenbogen as they traverse the river and rainforest to discover how tiny fish, called piabas, can help preserve the Amazon, its animals, and the rich legacy of its people. Amazon Adventure is an eye-opening—and ultimately hopeful—exploration of how humanity’s practices are affecting and shaping not only the Amazon, but our entire environment.
Finding Mighty by Sheela Chari
Along the train lines north of New York City, twelve-year-old neighbors Myla and Peter search for the link between Myla’s necklace and the disappearance of Peter’s brother, Randall. Thrown into a world of parkour, graffiti, and diamond-smuggling, Myla and Peter encounter a band of thugs who are after the same thing as Randall. Can Myla and Peter find Randall before it’s too late, and their shared family secrets threaten to destroy them all? Drawing on urban art forms and local history, Finding Mighty is a mystery that explores the nature of art and the unbreakable bonds of family.
