Meet our new District Nurse! Liz Deters
Hello Bandon families! I wanted to introduce myself, my name is Liz Deters, and I am the new district nurse for Bandon. First and foremost, I am a mom to two young children that attend Ocean Crest. I began the first several years of my nursing career in Pediatric Emergency Trauma Center in Cincinnati, OH. After moving here 12 years ago I worked in the hospital and home setting serving new moms and babies. I worked as a postpartum nurse, lactation educator, and assisted in homebirths. I’m sure I have even helped some families here bring your littles earthside! It is an honor to be able to care for your kiddos.
As a nurse I believe in family centered care. I want you, parents, to be involved in your child’s care and I want you to let me know if there is anything I can do for your child. As a mom I know how important it is to feel heard when it comes to our child’s needs and as a nurse, my goal is to advocate for you! If there is a significant injury or concern, I will call. If there is something you need to tell me, I will listen. I know my kids are my world and I know your kids are yours. I truly believe that we are all doing the best we can as parents, even if that looks different from others. I am here to support you and your family.
Please reach out to me if your child has a medical condition, if they are on medications, or if you have concerns. You can email me at ldeters@bandon.k12.or.us or call me directly at (541) 347-4958.
A couple housekeeping items:
I will not be handing out cough drops, however kids may have them if they are brought from home and deemed appropriate by their teacher.
I will be following the Oregon Health Authority’s recommendation on when to keep students’ home from school. I will attach the form for your reference. I want to keep our kids healthy and while it may be hard for some to keep our children home when they are sick, it is imperative that we work together to keep illness from spreading.
If your child requires medication at school, please bring it to the nurse’s office in its original packaging and fill out a medication authorization form.
For elementary families: Please make sure your child has an extra set of clothes in their backpack, we live in a rainy climate and kids often come to me wet needing extra clothes. Kids feel more comfortable in their own clothes.
I look forward to meeting your children and all the wonderful families that make up our school district. Please don’t hesitate to reach out for anything at all.
Sincerely,
Liz Deters

OCEAN CREST 15th ANNUAL JOG-A-THON "THE POWER OF PLAY”
Ocean Crest is pleased to announce our annual Jog-a-thon fundraiser on Thursday, October 12th, 2023. In the past, our Jog-a-thon money has paid for the sound system in the gym, a computer lab, document cameras and projectors in every classroom, the playground structures, Castle Crest and the current playground expansion, the PE equipment package that accompanies our PE curriculum, and computers in each classroom including Chromebooks at 2nd/3rd/4th Grades and iPads at Kinder/1st Grade. We have quite a track record for raising money for our school!
This year we are raising money to purchase new playground equipment to replace our beloved Castle Crest. Unfortunately, through many years of our coastal weather, Castle Crest was no longer safe for our students to play on. We were able to give the dedication plaque back to the family it was meant for.
We have a wonderful new playground plan that includes a ship and lighthouse made of recycled materials that will withstand the elements. This new setup will allow our students the opportunity to use their imagination and enjoy it for years to come. Even our 4th grade students that will be off to middle school next year will be able to enjoy it after school and on weekends.
We have reached out to other funding sources to help with this giant project. Our goal for the Jog a Thon this year is to raise $17,000. Our biggest Jog-a-thon fundraiser brought in over $17,500. We are hoping for support from our community without putting a strain on our families.
The Jog-a-thon is a fundraiser in which each student collects pledges to support school projects.
The sponsors may pledge to give a specific dollar amount for each lap or make a flat donation.
Students will complete 6-10 laps (on average) in 30 minutes.
Incentives will be given to the school as a whole. We want this to be an inclusive event, rather than exclusive. Whatever money is raised from our students will benefit ALL students. Please see the next page for our list of incentives.
Parents are welcome to come and cheer for their child or even jog along at the high school track!
Schedule:
9:00am-9:20am Kindergarten Jogs
9:45am-10:15am 1st and 2nd Grade Jogs

Valley Flora wanted to alert you to a few new programs that we - and other NW farms - are spearheading in in order to make fresh, local produce more accessible to low income families in our community. We’re trying to get the word out as widely as possible. If you have a spot to hang a poster (attached below), or room for a mention in your next newsletter, that would be wonderful! We are happy to provide you with a color-printed poster, just let us know! Also, please feel free to forward this email to anyone in your networks who would benefit from knowing about these programs.
- Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB): a program that helps low-income Oregonians purchase more fruits and vegetables while supporting local, family farms. Folks with SNAP benefits can purchase one of our farm’s community supported agriculture (CSA) shares and DUFB will provide 1:1 matching funds (they pay half the cost of the CSA with SNAP and DUFB covers the other half). It's a win-win that strengthens our community by providing better access to fresh, healthy food while helping local farmers earn a living.
- CSA Sliding Scale: our farm is offering a voluntary sliding scale payment system in order to make our food more accessible to everyone in the community. It’s been a beautiful example of community - and humanity - at its best.
