SLE Weekly Update April 14, 2022
Good afternoon East families,
This week our 9th, 10th, and 11th grade classes completed a series of assessments including the SAT, PSAT, and ACT WorkKeys. Meanwhile, our seniors had the opportunity to travel over to South Lyon High School and participate in a unified soccer game. All grade levels did a fantastic job navigating this week successfully.
As a friendly reminder, we do not have school tomorrow, April 15th. We hope that you and your family have a restful three day weekend.
Thank you for your time and support,
East Administration
Graduation Update
This year’s graduation ceremony will be held at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth on Saturday, June 11th at 4:00 PM. Seating for families is not limited, so tickets will not be required for the ceremony. We made the decision to change our venue this year because the current Covid protocols at EMU include restrictions that do not align with the protocols we have in place for South Lyon Community Schools. USA Hockey Arena has hosted graduation ceremonies for many years and we believe this location will provide a climate-controlled environment that ensures an opportunity for the families and loved ones of our graduates to enjoy the ceremony without concerns about limited tickets or challenging and unpredictable weather conditions. We will send more information to our graduating seniors very soon!
Thursday, April 21st - NWEA, MSTEP & Career Expo
On Thursday April 21st Freshmen and Sophomores will take the NWEA English, Juniors will take the MSTEP (the 3rd in the graduation requirement series of tests) and the Seniors will participate in the Career Expo during the first half of the school day. Students will attend their 4th, 5th, and 6th period classes the remainder of the day.
For all 9th and 10th grade students that were absent for PSAT testing on Thursday, April 14th makeups will be on Monday, April 18th for 9th grade students and on Tuesday, April 19th for 10th grade students.
SENIOR CAREER EXPO
After the keynote address, seniors will rotate through three career-related workshops including a virtual career fair session to hear from career experts in numerous industries. Other guest speakers at the event include: Ms. Jennifer Kluesner, Oakland Schools Career Consultant; Ms. Stacey Mehler, Junior Achievement of Southeastern Michigan Senior Director of Programs; and JoAnne Stadnicar, Schoolcraft College Career Services Director. At the conclusion of our Career Expo, seniors will be returning back to their regularly assigned 4th, 5th and 6th hour classes.
Seniors, we look forward to seeing you at the Expo next Thursday!
LINK CREW
SLE Link Crew is calling all current sophomore and junior leaders - we want YOU to apply for Link Crew! Link Crew Leaders are upperclassmen who are good role models for younger students. Their communication skills, leadership potential, responsibility, and personality have helped them succeed in the high school environment, and the lessons they have learned should be shared to help others succeed. You could have a tremendous influence on our new students and you will learn many valuable leadership skills in the process. Plus, it will be fun!
What does a Link Leader do? Leaders are trained to work with the incoming freshman class who are entering our school next fall. After extensive training, Leaders will run freshman orientation before school starts in August. At the orientation, each Leader will be paired with a partner and given a small group of freshmen to work with that day. They will befriend and help the group during the first week of school to aid students with challenges they may face. Periodically during the school year, Leaders will meet again with their student groups to touch base, discuss problems, and plan social activities. We know that the more contact a freshman has with their Leader, the more successful the freshman will be.
Sound like fun? Join our Google Classroom (code gcnssj2) and submit an application by Friday, April 22, at 3:00PM. The application consists of a written and a video portion, so please remember to submit both! Please contact Mrs. Giovanni (giovannic@slcs.us, room 2214), Mr. Gala (galan@slcs.us, room 2416), or Mrs. Melville (melviller@slcs.us, room 3401) if you have any questions.
