This week's Art Classes with Rocky
Throughout history kids have kept journals of what is happening in their own personal lives as they live through tragic world events. The pictures and written journal entries they leave behind become history. In some instances, they become a part of our history books. An
excellent written example is the Diary of Anne Frank, her family had to hide in an attic from
Nazis for an extended period of time. She wrote what went through her mind, what people
were doing, and how it affected everyone around her. Her journals have been translated into a
multitude of languages, and kids all over the world read them in school. There have been many drawings and paintings by people who lived through events, that show a different perspective than what we might see in the history books. I grew up hearing stories about battles that took place in the west from a Native perspective. My grandma always told me to look for the stories of people who were there.
History is usually written by the winners, but there are often a variety of perspectives for any one event. This week, I want you to think about how you would describe this worldwide Pandemic. I think for many people in Alaska it has not changed their lives all that much. Some people are out of work, stores may not have as much in the way of choices, kids have to stay home from school, and some kids no longer get to play with their friends. For people in other parts of the world, life is really hard right now. People are hungry, afraid, and even dying. They are having a very different experience than we are. Think about 100 years from now, what do you imagine will be in the history books from this World Pandemic? If you could be in the history books, and you will, what will you tell the world about this time? Each person will have a different experience, and should write or draw what is happening to them personally.
For this assignment, I want you to draw a story about how this is changing your life. It is OK to draw your fears, your boredom, the fun things, the sad things, and even the annoying things. What you draw may someday end up as a historical document in the history of Alaska.
If you have not seen it yet, I am including the step by step drawing example for people.
I would really love to see your drawings, please email me copies. My email is rnear@yksd.com. I love getting copies of any art you do.
