GAEA Newsletter
Stan Dodson, GAEA President
being "Lit from Within"
Greetings members, it is my pleasure to introduce myself as I begin the Presidency of GAEA, I send a warm welcome and look forward to our partnership.
The new year is often a time of renewal, in both a spiritual and physical sense. The metaphorical turning of the calendar year presents new opportunities for growth, goals, and gratitude. However, the perpetual sense of time being frozen has captivated each of us as the global pandemic ebbs and flows as we sometimes ask, when will it end? Where is the light?
As an activation activity I often challenge my students to assume the perspective of a candle, writing reflectively and representing how objects can be symbolic. I look to extend this metaphor to each of you; however, I want you to see your illumination not as a lit wick but being lit from within. What fuels your art education journey? What is the fire within?
GAEA has often provided me that reignited flame, through my extended art family I found purpose and place. We on the GAEA board have been working to realigning our goals and purposes to better serve you and we hope you too will be excited by the call to action as we roll out ways to serve, advocate, research, and educate. Highlighted in this newsletter are several ways to rekindle that flame, one at the forefront is our GAEA Spring conference in Tybee, I invite each of you, as Shel Silverstein says, “Come in” and together we can be the light.
If you are a dreamer, come in.
If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar,
A hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer...
If you're a pretender, come sit by my fire
For we have some flax-golden tales to spin
Come in!
Come in!
-Shel Silverstein

Board of Directors
During our last full board meeting, we voted and approved a motion to revise the wording on the ‘Board of Directors’ to fall more in alignment with NAEA. This clarified who are voting members of the board. Here is a copy of the approved amendment to article IV:
The Board of Directors shall be comprised of the President, the President-Elect and the Past President, the Secretary, the Treasurer, Members-at-Large, and the Division Representatives, which are mostly all elected positions shall be considered voting members of the Board of Directors. All other positions such as District Presidents and designated Committee Chairpersons which are non-elected and voluntary positions shall be considered non-voting members of the Board of Directors.
As such, members who are serving on the board in a non-voting capacity are now candidates for GAEA and NAEA awards and honors.
