College Prep English 10
Ms. Weldon, 2018 - 2019
Course Syllabus: College Prep English 10
This summer I spent a great week with some outstanding educators. Despite being a room full of very experienced teachers, we were also a room full of learners--everyone striving to improve, everyone striving to try something new, and everyone striving to support one another. Most importantly, we were a room full of people open to change.
Teaching and learning is an ongoing, ever-changing process and phenomenon. As teachers, as students, as people, we are all rough drafts of the people we are becoming.
Growth Mindset: Resilience & Revision |Grit & Growth
A+ College Ready ask us to "Equip. Empower. Expect More" from our students. Here are my expectations for you for the year so you can become MORE: resilience, perseverance, and academic growth.
- I expect you to be resilient. You should welcome your mistakes, learn from them and never give up. We learn more when we struggle than when it comes easy.
- I expect you to be willing to revise to be better. Not only must you be willing to revise to be a better writer, you must be willing to revise to be a better student and ultimately a better person. We are all humans, We all make mistakes. Making changes and growing from our mistakes is key.
- I expect you to show grit and to persevere. Our work will be hard. It will require you to struggle. Please do not give up. Work hard. Push through.
- I expect you to show growth. It is time to take charge of your own learning and academic growth. It is time to make sure you know how to learn, no matter what subject you find yourself studying. It is time to grow as a person
Writing is Hard Work
Scoring of your writing will be based upon modified versions of the 1-9 AP Language & Literature Rubrics with growth towards the AP Lang and Lit courses in mind. Rubrics will be provided and explained. We will also practice scoring sample essays as a class. Writing assignments will be scored holistically and focus on skills may shift from assignment to assignment. Again, with overall growth in mind. Scoring essays with thoughtful feedback and the goal to help you grow as a writer takes time. Please be patient and allow me the time to effectively score your essays.
Your semester exams will be based upon writing portfolios and reflection. More details will follow.
Outside Reading Expectations
Every 9 weeks, you will be expected to read outside of class. This is to help build your stamina as a reader and to help you improve your reading skills. Here is an overview of your outside reading assignments. More details will follow each time I make the official assignment. Do not worry about starting these assignments yet. This is just a "heads-up." Also, keep in mind these assignments may change due to time constraints, our needs as a class or my big and wonderful ideas :)
- 1st 9 Weeks: We will continue our exploration of Freedom and read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury copies of the text will be provided
- 2nd 9 Weeks: We will continue our exploration of Justice and read The Scarlett Letter by National Hawthorne and Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
- 3rd 9 Weeks: We will continue our exploration of the Search for an Ideal World and read YA Dystopian Literature. This will be a book of your choice from an approved list.
- 4th 9 Weeks: We will continue our exploration of the Human Search for Identity and read another book of your choice from an approved list.
How will we Study Grammar?
- We will complete grammar exercises as part of a daily bellringer.
- You will keep your DGP work in your notebook and you are responsible for completing the exercises even when absent from school.
- DGP work will be spot-checked once every three weeks without advance notice. You are responsible for completing the exercises even when absent from school.
How will we Study Vocabulary?
Academic Honesty Policy and Document
Group Seating
- A major component of learning in this class will occur in cooperative learning groups during activities, and projects. You will be expected to be a responsible group member and positively contribute to the success of your team. If you cannot or will not contribute to your group, you will be given a separate, individual assignment and you will not receive credit for your group's work.
Academic Honesty
- You will be expected to be honest and use the utmost integrity. Copying another student’s work, inside or outside of class, is dishonest and considered cheating. "Helping" a friend by doing work for him or her is not helping. This, too, is considered cheating. Cheating will result in a zero on that assignment or test and disciplinary referral. Cheating will not be tolerated.
