STEM Class: Circuits up close
Hello!
Dear Parents, Guardians, & Students:
I hope you are enjoying this three day weekend which celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He sought to resolve conflict and remedy disenfranchisement through peaceful means. This legacy cannot be overstated.
This week’s newsletter is organized through a teacher spotlight and an announcement section which lists numerous events that will be happening this week or in the future. Also, please be sure to examine the showcased photos that correspond to ongoing events.
Teacher Spotlight ~ Mr. Mark Zippin
This week, in STEM we learned how to solder electronic circuits. Students have completed, or are in the process of troubleshooting and completing, an electric Christmas Tree. The process involved reading a schematic diagram written in Chinese and installing a switch, 6 capacitors, 6 transistors, 7 resistors, a 4.5volt power supply and 33 Light-emitting diodes (L.E.D.s) which change color over time.
Another project required students to solder LED’s onto a circuit board which was attached to a pair of eyeglasses. Students installed resistors, capacitors, transistors and an integrated optical amplifier (op-amp), a power 23v power supply and a switch. This system is sound activated and we had a very high success rate with this project. Once we finished the project, the smiles on their faces after were priceless.

In Conclusion:
As a former history teacher I frequently find meaning in the words of those giants of the past such as MLK. I found this particular quote appropriate to share:
"Make a career of humanity. Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. You will make a better person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in."
~ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., March for Integrated Schools, April 18, 1959.
As always, we at North Brookfield JR/SR High School are indebted to you for entrusting us with your children. If you have any questions or questions, please reach out to me.
Thank you.
.
Sincerely,
John F. Gould, Ed. D.
North Brookfield JR/SR High School Interim Principal
