A Letter from our Principal Regarding the Solar Eclipse
Dear Sycamore Families,
On Monday, August 21, a rare total solar eclipse will be visible during the school day. The eclipse will occur in our area beginning around 1:00 p.m. and ending around 3:50 p.m. with nearly 91% of the sun covered by around 2:30 p.m. Sycamore Community Schools will use this scientific event as a teachable moment for our students while maintaining their safety.
While we truly appreciate the significance of this rare scientific event, the safety and security of our students is one of our utmost priorities. During an eclipse, the sun's UV radiation is incredibly powerful and has the potential to severely burn the retina, causing temporary or even permanent blind spots in one's vision. According to the American Optometric Association, no one should look directly at a solar eclipse without specialized eye protection. Regular sunglasses are not safe to view the eclipse.
In order to ensure the safety of our elementary students, our teachers will engage students in age-appropriate indoor classroom activities centered on the science behind this phenomenon. Your student(s) will be able to observe the solar eclipse via a NASA live stream from the safety of their classroom. All PE classes and recess will be held indoors on Monday afternoon.
Families who choose to remove their student(s) from school on Monday, August 21, to participate in parent supervised activities around this event will be permitted to do so. The absence will be counted as an excused absence.
Because this event will occur near dismissal time, we will remind students of precautions related to the event and the importance of following bus rules. We encourage you to have a discussion with your student about the eclipse, when it will happen, and how to observe this exciting event safely. The attached fact sheet from NASA contains great information for students of all ages.
We appreciate your understanding and assistance with all aspects of this event.

Hello Maple Dale Families!
We here in the office want to thank you all for your patience and cooperation as we transition into the new school year.

In the event a student needs to ride a different bus, or exit the bus at a stop other than their assigned stop, students must obtain a bus pass by having a parent complete and return the Parent Communication Form.
Please be sure you are filling out Parent Communication Forms when you know your student is going to be absent or late.

A Message from our Nurse
Dear Maple Dale families,
I hope you had an enjoyable summer and you're ready for another great school year. Summer is a fun time with lots of sleep overs, fun camps, and many opportunities for children to hang out together and share.... Head lice. Head lice causes no illness but creates some anxiety among parents. In order to have a great beginning of the school year and prevent unnecessary hassle, please add one more item to your Back to School To Do List: Please check your child's hair for head lice and treat as needed before school starts.
You would find information on head lice, tips on checking for head lice and treatment in the following links. You are also welcome to call me anytime at 686-1723 for any questions or concerns.
How to check and treat for head lice:
Wishing all our students and families a great school year!

At Maple Dale, each of our “Houses” is named for a famous aviator:
The Armstrong House---”The Rockets”---House Color is Red
The Coleman House---”The Mavericks”---House color is Yellow
The Earhart House---”The Pioneers”---House Color is Green
The Wright House---”The Flyers”---House Color is Blue
Today is the beginning of a four-part series recognizing the accomplishments of each of the aviators we are named for.
Aviator Focus of the Week: Neil Armstrong
On July 20, 1969, American astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped off the lunar landing module Eagle, and became the first human to walk on the surface of the moon. Nearly 240,000 miles from Earth, Armstrong spoke these words to more than a billion people listening at home: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Armstrong died on August 25, 2012, at age 82.
Neil Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930 near Wapakoneta, Ohio
He was fascinated with flight at an early age and earned his student’s pilot license when he was only 16!
Armstrong attended Purdue University on a U.S. Navy scholarship.
Neil Armstrong served in the Korean War in 1949 as a Navy Pilot.
After the war, Armstrong went to work for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, (the agency that later became NASA.)
Armstrong was an astronaut on the Apollo 11 mission to the moon in 1969.
Armstrong was the first human being to walk on the moon!
Mrs. Reinke was only 4 and ½ years old when she remembers watching the moon landing on a black and white T.V. in her living room!
Sharing our goals for the year:
On Monday, August 14, the Maple Dale staff gathered for a meeting and established the following goals for the year for our school.
Peacebuilders--Continue this valuable program in year two of implementation.
Professional Learning Communities--Teachers work together to review student performance weekly and to plan for differentiated instruction.
Effective Feedback and other Formative Instructional Practices---Teachers will work to increase the use of feedback to increase student growth and will use formative instructional practices daily.
Writing Across the Curriculum--Students will write in all subjects to express ideas and observations.
For the following four weeks, we will take a look at each of these goals in-depth and provide tangible ways for parents to partner with us in these efforts. With your help, we can accomplish our goals and help all students experience growth and success!
