A Message From Our Principals
Dear families,
We have so much to celebrate!
- Our choir took a field trip to local nursing homes. It brought joy to the residents.
- Our student council raised $2,155.12 for A to Z Literacy through their penny war challenge!
- Our PTA supported getting bouncy houses for our PE classes this week to reward students for positive behavior.
- Our Glacier Ridge Reads friends celebrated our Monarch Madness winner: Are You a Cheeseburger?
- Our students completed IAR testing.
We are grateful to all the families and staff who supported these efforts for our students. We hope you have a wonderful spring break with family and friends!
-Dr. Gruper and Mrs. Reinhardt
PBIS - Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports
Trimester 2 Celebration
- Thank you Glacier Ridge PTA for helping us celebrate our PBIS reward this semester with a fun week in the gym! Students were able to move through stations in P.E. stacking large cups, riding scooters, going through tunnels, and jumping around in inflatables.
Recess Reminders
- At Glacier Ridge, we encourage all learners to be respectful, responsible and safe on the playground. We would love for all parents to take a moment to remind their children to be kind and respectful at recess and follow the expectations of safety while on the playground in the morning as well as at lunch recess.
Please join us in welcoming Mrs. Faustrum as a long-term substitute in the art classroom!
Mrs. Faustrum grew up in Crystal Lake and graduated from South High School. After high school she attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago while she was a nanny for twin girls in Lincoln Park. In the early 2000's she was the Director of Education at Brickton Art Center in Park Ridge. Currently, Mrs. Faustrum is a substitute teacher and works for the Courthouse News Service as a journalist and researcher. We have been lucky to have Mrs. Faustrum substitute this year at Glacier Ridge. She has developed a strong rapport with many of our students. Mrs. Faustrum and her husband have two daughters; they attend Central High School and Husmann Elementary.

2022-23 Calendar: Last Day of School
An updated 2022-23 calendar will be posted on the D47 website after spring break. District 47 waits to post an updated calendar until winter has passed as any updates to the calendar must be re-submitted to and approved by the state. The current calendar includes five emergency days; so far, one emergency day has been used due to the ice storm on February 23. As of today (3/21/23) the last days of school will be Tuesday, May 30 (grades 1-8) and Friday, May 26 (Kindergarten and Wehde) assuming no additional emergency days are used.
5Essentials Parent Survey
The 5Essentials parent survey, administered online by UChicago Impact, is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of schools and to help school districts understand the conditions at each school to help guide improvement. D47 parents are encouraged to take the survey for their child's school by visiting https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/. Parent identity and survey responses will be kept confidential and will not be connected to their student(s). Families can submit one survey for each child. The 5Essentials survey window will be open through March 31, 2023.
Virtual Parenting Series Recordings
The last virtual parenting session (topic: Parenting with a Growth Mindset) of the 2022-23 school year was March 15. In case you missed it or would like to tune into previous recordings, visit the D47 website.
School Board Election Guide for Parents
The D47 Parent Group Advisory Council (made up of D47 PTO/PTA representatives) has collectively created a School Board Election Guide for D47 parents about the upcoming school board election on April 4, 2023. The guide, now posted on the D47 website under the Board of Ed tab, is intended to inform parents about the candidates running for open school board positions and to explain the roles and responsibilities of school board members.
Online Kindergarten Registration Closes April 20, 2023
Online kindergarten registration for the 2023-24 school year will remain open until April 20, 2023. To register, go to www.d47.org/kindergarten. Classes are filling up, so register NOW to help secure your child’s placement for next year! To learn more about why registering early for kindergarten is important, listen to Star 105.5 FM’s interview with District 47’s director of communications.
Reducing Strep Throat Infections at School
IDPH and the CDC are observing an increase in strep throat -- specifically invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS) -- infections among children. ISBE is joining IDPH and and the CDC in stressing the importance of early recognition, diagnosis, and appropriate treatment of these diseases in children and adults. This parent fact sheet contains helpful information on the signs, symptoms and how families can help reduce the spread.
Cell Phones & Smartwatch Policy
Students are allowed to have a cell phone or smartwatch at school as long as it is turned off from 8:50 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Cell phones must remain in the student’s locker at all times during the school day. Smartwatches are not to be used as internet access or cellular devices during the school day. Note: Elementary school lockers do not lock and the school/district is not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen personal property. If a student needs to make an emergency call during the day, the student should request permission to go to the main office and use the phone. If parents need to contact their child during the day, they should call the school’s main office. Cell phones will not be allowed on field trips and should be set to silent/vibrate while riding to and from school on a school bus.
Exceptions - Students who require access to a cell phone, app or other electronic device to monitor a medical condition or fulfill an IEP or 504 plan accommodation will be allowed to carry their device during the school day. However, these students will be expected to use the device only for this purpose and must obtain prior approval from school administration.
Additional things to note: District 47 treats any electronic device with the capability to call, text, or take photos as a cell phone/smartwatch. If a student uses the device inappropriately and/or if it causes a disruption during the school day, the device will be confiscated and taken to the school office. See consequences of cell phone violations here.
Morning Arrival
To assist with the traffic in the morning, it would be extremely helpful for car riders to be dropped off between 8:30 and 8:45.
Families Communicating Immediate Needs
We want to remind families that teachers, staff, and principals prioritize teaching, learning and engaging with students during the school day. They are not expected to monitor their email while school is in session. Please allow 24 to 48 hours for an email response. If your concern is urgent, please contact the school’s main office. Thank you!
Visitors Entering the School
Please know that Mrs. Seisser or Mrs. Stark will follow the new visitor protocol. If you will be volunteering at Glacier Ridge, you will also need to follow our volunteer guidelines and complete a volunteer application. We appreciate your help in keeping our school safe!
