A September to Remember
A message from the Principal
We are off to a fantastic start to our school year! I am so impressed with the energy the kids bring to school at the start of the year. We are committed and dedicated to keeping that positive energy going all year.
I mentioned in our kick off newsletter the fact that the teachers spent several days over the summer, learning and growing in their professional knowledge. I am seeing first hand that all of their hard work is paying off! The workshop approach to teaching and learning is thriving in our literacy blocks. I am amazed every time I walk in the classrooms how much collaboration the kids are engaged in!
Many more great things are on the horizon. Students will be taking our universal screener, STAR, in grades 2-4 in the next few weeks. The STAR test results will help guide teachers' instruction and identify areas of strength and areas in need of growth for our kids.
In closing, I'd like to give a shout out to our PTO. Our students and staff are so fortunate to have such a supportive group. If you are interested in being a part of an amazing group of parents that truly help make Garfield special---whether a big part or a behind the scenes part---please consider!! Next meeting is Monday, October 2nd, 6:30 at Garfield.
Bring on the fall temperatures!
Take care,
Ms. Cassandra Schultz

September Character trait: Respect
When kids are recognized for 3 character traits, they will also be given a T-shirt. We are including last year's character trait winners. With that in mind, one student already earned a 3rd recognition when recognized for respect this September! I'm sure we'll have lots more at the end of October when we recognize our students who are consistently demonstrating a growth mindset. On our assembly days, we will ask students who have earned a shirt to wear it! We'll be sure to use Class Dojo to remind the parents and kids--but it typically is the last Friday of the month. Looking forward to seeing the growing number of kids in the crowd wearing our "This kid is propelled by great character" shirts.

4th Grade Field Trip
On Wednesday, September 27th, the 4th graders around the district were invited to the 2017 Evironmental Field Day at Marinette City Park. Our 4th graders walked to City Park and were able to participate in 7 different stations to learn about various different topics. The stations topic: Mammals, Herptiles, Water Quality, Composting, Insects, Aquatic Invasive Species and Leaf Prints.
Station 1: Anne Bartels of Marinette County LWCD shared with us Mammals. The students learned how mammals are classified, got to see the skulls and teeth to determine if they are carnivores, herbivores or omnivores and felt the hides of many animals such as: buffalo, sheep, black bear, deer, fox, otter, beaver, badger, bobcat, skunk to name a few. They were also given an apple for snack.
Station 2: Greg Cleereman of Marinette County LWCD explained Herptiles. We were able to see a snake, turtle, toad, tree frog, a snapping turtle shell and many pictures of reptiles in our area. We learned how reptiles and amphibians are different, how they reproduce and protect themselves over the Wisconsin winters.
Station 3: Water Quality presented by Chuck Druckrey of Marinette County LWCD explained runoff and what is getting in our ground water. We also learned how to tell if the pollution in water is dangerous by the creatures that live in it.
Station 4: Tom Crowley taught us all about Composting. He shared how composting can help Mother Earth, reduce/eliminate waste, create healthy soil, save space in landfills, and is easy to do at home!
Station 5: Scott Reuss of the Marinette County UW-Extension created a fun activity about insects. The students were given a card with a insect on it and had to locate the food source needed for survival. We also learned about the parts of an insects body and some of the processes they go through.
Station 6: Aquatic Invasive Species. Ryan Parchim of Marinette County LWCD shared with us all of the invasive species in our lakes, streams and rivers. We learned how to prevent spreading these invasive species and how the food chain has had to adapt to the species now in our waters.
Station 7: Leaf Prints with Sandy Pitroski and Sandi Brumbaugh. The kids created paintings using leaves, pinecones and other plants.
Overall this day was filled with fun and creative ways to learn about the environment. Each student walked away with something they learned, something they can do, something interestings and an appreciation for the environment. We were so lucky to have had this opportunity. Many thanks to the Marinette County Land and Water Conservation Division and all of the people that made this possible!
