Bids

According to John Gottman of the University of Washington, the crucial move in relationships is a bid.

A bid is a message we send, verbally or nonverbally, that tells someone that we want to connect with them.

A bid is a fundamental unit of emotional communication which can be a question, gesture, look, or touch.

Responses to Bids

Turn Toward the Bid - respond positively

Turn Against the Bid - respond in belligerent or argumentative way

Turn Away from the Bid - Ignore or have no response
