Weekly Updates from Big Walnut High School
February 15, 2019
We hope you had a Happy Valentine's Day! Summer opportunities for students are starting to become available. Please continue to check our newsletter each week as we pass along that information. Third quarter is now more than half-way over. Please be sure to encourage your student(s) to stay on top of their academic progress and check in with teachers during Eagle Time as needed. Additionally, BWHS and our district have some fun events in the coming weeks to help beat the winter blues. See this week's newsletter for information on our musical, the Harlem Wizards and more!
Remember, there is no school this Monday, February 18, due to Presidents' Day!
Enjoy your long weekend!
As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teachers, school counselor or the administration if you have any questions or concerns. Feel free to contact the main office at 740-965-3766 between the hours of 7:00 and 3:15.

FFA/Ag Program Celebrates Successes!
Four students participated this week in the Agricultural Sales CDE. The team placed second in the event. Individually, Rachel Sherman placed 3rd, Chris Dible placed 4th, Caleb Durheim placed 9th, Cameron Reid placed 12th, and Justin Hill was the alternate for the team. In this event, students demonstrated their sales skills by marketing a product and handling a situation with an irate customer. They have qualified for the Ohio Agricultural Sales CDE Finals in Marysville on March 5.
Public Speaking Success
Madi Withrow earned the opportunity to compete in the District 6 Prepared Public Speaking CDE next week by placing first in her division at the sub-district event this Tuesday. Madi wrote and presented a speech about the Northstar housing development and the impacts it could have on our community, including water quality concerns and displacement of endangered species.
Three Students Attend IPPE
Members of the National winning Food Science & Technology CDE Team travelled to Atlanta, GA this week to take part in the International Production & Processing Expo. The US Poultry Foundation sponsored the trip for our students. This expo brings together nearly 40,000 poultry growers and processors and is the largest of its kind. Students had the opportunity to network with some of the largest food processing companies in the world and learn about potential careers for after high school. Our team also got to attend an executive luncheon and hosted tables with some prominent people in the Poultry industry, including college deans and company CEOs.
WOW! If you see any of these students, wish them congratulations on all the success their hard work has earned them!
SENIORS: Big Walnut Education Foundation Scholarship Information
The Big Walnut Education Foundation, Inc. estimates that it will be awarding approximately $90,000 in scholarships to Big Walnut students this year. The Education Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization begun in 1994 and controlled by a board of trustees from the Big Walnut community. Vote for Adeline's Mural!
One of our 9th grade students, Adeline List, is in a mural competition for the Columbus Dispatch. For her to win, she needs our help. Please take a moment to go to the Columbus Dispatch Home and Garden Show Instagram (dispatchhgshow) and vote for her by liking her picture! Voting goes live on Saturday morning. Her mural is beautiful and she is the youngest competitor. Thanks!
Updates from the School Counseling Office
Scheduling Information for 2019-2020:
Parents and students should take some time to look at the scheduling request packets that were passed out recently during class meetings. Students are encouraged to talk to their current teachers about choices in particular subject areas and if a student chooses to take an advanced class, they MUST have the "Advanced Course Request" form signed by BOTH a teacher in the subject area and a guardian. All students will have a 1:1 conference with their counselor to schedule.
Current 9th grade students who took a middle school class for high school credit, will also receive an additional document asking families to decide if the student will keep the letter grade (which is what all students have by default) or if they would prefer the letter grade be changed to a "P" for passing. Details are explained on the document but it must be turned in by the end of the student's 9th grade year.
All student requests will be completed by spring break and students will receive their schedules in August.
