No School 11/7! Reminder!!
Conferences
Reminder!!
Conferences are scheduled for
November 16th . Children are welcome to attend their scheduled time. This is especially helpful in the upper grades. We are hoping to have 100% attendance from our parents. Don’t forget that 11/10 & 11/16th are half days of school with dismissal at 11:45 a.m.
Greetings Wegienka Families:
It is that time of year, when cold, flu & other “bugs” hit our homes and infect our
bodies. This often leads us as parents to ask the question, “Should I keep my child home from school today?” While being at school can be a very enjoyable experience, it is also a lot of hard work! Children who are feeling miserable are often unable to participate and engage in learning.
Here are some tips to consider when determining if a child should stay home:
First, the easy ones…
*If your child is running a fever, or has run a fever in the past 24 hours, he/she needs to remain home. (The CDC states that children are fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medicine prior to return to school).
*If your child has vomited in the past 24 hours, or is very nauseous, he/she needs to remain home.
*If your child has any type of infectious disease (i.e. pink eye, strep throat, head lice, influenza, etc) he/she should remain home until under treatment according to Wayne County Health Guidelines.
It is more difficult to determine whether your child should stay home when he/she has a runny nose, persistent cough, tummy ache, headache, etc…
Some rules of thumb to consider are:
· Will your child be able to manage his/her symptoms during the 7 hour
school day?
· Will he/she be able to concentrate on schoolwork, complete assignments,
participate in class and participate in lunch & recess?
· Are the symptoms likely to infect other children who will be in close
proximity?
· Would I want a fellow classmate with the same symptoms to be sitting next to, or across from, my child all day?
All parents desire a healthy environment for their child and look to other parents to help contribute to this by keeping home children who are ill.
We certainly understand that it is often challenging for parents to miss work and that securing child care for sick children is difficult. However, having children who are sick in close proximity with others only leads to the spread of illness and infection - it also makes a child’s day difficult to manage.
We will continue to support and encourage good hygiene habits amongst our boys and girls while they are here at school, and are appreciative of the extra efforts of our
custodial staff in keeping our school sanitized and clean.
Wishing you and your family a healthy fall season,
Mrs. Briegel
Lost and Found
Fall is upon us and so is the cool weather. Please make sure that your child’s sweatshirts, sweaters, and jackets have a name on the label so that they can be returned to them. If you are missing something, please stop by the lost and found by the cafeteria. Every effort is made to locate owners. Items not claimed prior to Thanksgiving recess will be removed and donated to charity.
Retakes- 11/14
Picture Retakes
Picture Retake Day is Tuesday, November 14th. If your child missed having his or her school picture taken in October spruce him or her up on Tuesday, the 14th , for retakes. If you wish to purchase a picture package, fill out the order form, put the form and your check in an envelope and send them to school with your child on Tuesday, November 14th.
OOPS Clothing Needed
Some of you are already familiar with our “Oops” clothing supply. These clothes are loaned to students on days that the students have had some kind of incident with their regular clothes such as wet clothes from puddles or a spilled drinks, torn or dirty pants, etc. We ask that the borrowed clothes be cleaned and returned to the office. Having these extra clothes available to students allows the students to remain in their classrooms – learning. Additionally, we don’t have to interrupt your day. Please consider donating some clothes (outgrown or “I don’t like that anymore”) to our “Oops” clothing supply. Any donation would be greatly appreciated.

Read on to find out more!
Points:
Students will return to zero points at the beginning of each school year. The following quantity of points are required for the entire year.
2nd grade: 20 points
3rd grade: 30 points
4th grade: 40 points
5th grade: 50 points
The goal is that all students will successfully make their year-end goal.
How will AR points be tracked?
Points will be tracked in each classroom.
What level will students read at to take tests?
Students will be given their zone range from our STAR testing at least each quarter.
What happens when a child meets their goal?
The classroom teacher will fill out a certificate for the student and they will come down to the office and receive their AR celebration tag and necklace. (For the first tag) Then every award after will be proudly added to the AR necklace.
Once a child reaches their goal for the year, we want them to continue to read. Every twenty points after, the child will bring the documentation to the office and their name will go in the grade level prize drawing and they will receive another celebration tag!
At the end of the year celebration, the prizes will be drawn.
Top reader in each class will receive a gift certificate from the PTO to shop at the book fair.
One winner from each grade level will receive a special prize.
All tickets will then be combined and the grand prize winner will receive a $50.00 gift card to Toys R Us!!
How do we use the information from AR tests?
Staff members will use the information to guide their leveled reading instruction in the classroom.
When will students take AR tests:
Students can take AR tests in the classroom, the media center or the computer lab. The media center has many open library times that the children can use to test.
How do I learn more about this program at Wegienka:
