Captain's Log
PASS CHRISTIAN PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT
Ahoy, Pirates!
In our district, we believe students eXcel when learning is a SHARED responsibility among all stakeholders: parents, teachers, principals, administrators, student services, students, board members, and community joining forces to ensure student success.
What does a shared responsibility for learning look like? What about “empowered” learners? Here is one of many eXamples.
While leaving PCES last week, I passed by the conference room. What I saw made my heart beam with pride. In that room sat a 2nd-grade student with his data in front of him talking to a room full of adults about his data, work, and behavior. Just how did he come to be in the room during his parent's meeting? Well, I am glad you asked.
He took it upon himself to ask his principal to sit down with him at lunch. During the conversation, he asked if he could attend his parent conference to tell his mom and dad about his grades and performance. He went on to ask if he could come in during activity time because he did not want to miss class. Mrs. Cuevas and his teachers gave him the chance and he accepted the opportunity to explain all of his data and celebrate his amazing growth. He even set a new goal. How's that for a shared responsibility from an empowered learner?
This level of student engagement only happens when children feel SAFE and EMPOWERED. This moment helped to reassure me that our mission is clear; we are focused. We thanked his mother for partnering with us, and we thank you for empowering our students to own their Pirate eXperiences and learning.
I could not be more proud. With that, I submit the first Captain's Log of the new decade. #2020vision #committedtoeXcellence #eXcellencemarksthespot cje
