What's Going On in the Library?
May 2017
May 13: Kids Read Across RI Event
Kids Reading Across Rhode Island (KRARI) encourages students across the state in grades 3 through 6 to read the same book. This year’s selection is Save Me a Seat by Sarah Weeks and Gita Varadarajan. I've read it, and I loved it. In fact, I was the one who suggested it to the KRARI committee! I'm super excited that it was chosen.
Come celebrate KRARI on Saturday, May 13, at the State House from 2–4 p.m. Each family will receive a free copy of Save Me a Seat (while supplies last), and the authors will be available for signings.
But that’s not all! There will be crafts, games, and activities from RI libraries and organizations, and a preview of the “Save Me a Seat” play. I hope to see some Oak Lawn families there!
Week of May 22: Reading Week and Book Fair
Our spring book fair will run during Reading Week, Monday, May 22 and Friday, May 26. Classrooms will visit the book fair during their scheduled library time.
The flyer coming home includes just a sampling of the fair books, which can be purchased with cash, credit card, or a check made out to Oak Lawn School. You may send a note/wish list along with the money or email me at mmoore@cpsed.net if you have buying preferences for your student.
You may also preview/purchase more titles by visiting the online fair between now and May 29.
Thanks to everyone who has already signed up to volunteer. If you have the time and a BCI check on file, I still need help for a few shifts: Friday, May 19 setup; Tuesday, May 23 afternoon shopping; and Friday, May 26 morning shopping and breakdown.
Please feel free to email me at mmoore@cpsed.net with any questions. Thanks!
May 23: Author Visit with Kara LaReau
LaReau knows all aspects of creating a book; she spent years on the other side of the publishing business, acting as Kate DiCamillo's editor for such titles as "Because of Winn-Dixie" and "The Tale of Despereaux." She will be reading from her own titles and talking about the writing process. If you have any of her books at home, your student can bring them in to be signed.
