Making Waves
Being the Change
A Unit in Social Activism
Over the course of this unit each student will work in a collaborative group which is focused on advocating for a social cause. The cause may be great or small local or global. Some will accomplish their goal, some will make progress some may fail to change things; but all will discover that they have the ability to make an impact and change the world around them.
Parts of "The Wave"
Each student is required to complete the following components to earn a passing grade:
1. Responses to videos, an essay or letter, Responses to a companion text =30%
2. Create a video for your cause=20%
3. Create a Social Media Campaign =25%
4. Create a presentation and show to the class about your cause=25%
Global Issues
Generally speaking the larger the problem the more difficult the solution. Activists have a long road which must also be the reward. Some causes you may want to champion would be impossible to solve in five weeks.
Local Issues
A wonderful idea might be to start a grass roots project, such as initiating an evening program for practical skills for students or getting a public basketball court set up on the Campus High property.
