Celebrating Our Freedom to Read
Celebrating Banned Books Week #MichED Chat 9/25/19
Censorship leaves us in the dark -- leave the light on.
Q1: Does your school celebrate Banned Books Week? If so, how? If not, what would you do to celebrate or raise awareness?
Q2: Book challenges happen when you least expect them. Does your BOE have policy and/or administrative guidelines on challenge of materials? Are you familiar with your district policy?
Q3: Can processes used for selecting books in the library or class be a form of censorship.? Does this violate the "Freedom to Read"?
Q4: Scavenger hunt question. Do you know the 11 books that top the list of challenged books for this year? And what is the significance of there being 11 books?
Q5: Do you see a pattern in the books that are challenged? To what do you attribute this?
Q6: When would you (if ever) feel it appropriate to request removal of a book from your classroom, curriculum, or school library?
