Building Community and Leaders
Teachers, faculty, and staff have attended a plethora of workshops over the past few years. The hard-working dedicated members of DLE have come together to pull the best of the best from all the programs they’ve learned about (including an idea or two from Harry Potter) and re-imagined their Leadership and Character Education program. Students and faculty have been sorted into one of 6 houses. In order to model the new philosophy of LEAD to SUCCEED. This new program will provide DLE students an opportunity to:
Ø forge new relationships across all grade levels
Ø earn house points when “caught” being a good leader
Ø celebrate accomplishments with the entire school
Ø build intrinsic values for learning, leading, and behavior
Ø find their inner leadership abilities and grow as leaders
Ø learn the importance of working together to set & achieve goals
DLE’s focus and purpose of the 6 houses is to foster camaraderie and teamwork across the entire faculty and staff. Every single working person on campus is included in this new endeavor – nobody is left out. We are building relationships across grade levels (and departments) for our students and adults, providing everyone opportunities to shine, be creative, and lead to succeed. Each of the 6 houses focuses on one main character trait, and two supporting traits. They are:
The House of TRUST (Blue) - Honor & Perseverance
The House of OPTIMISIM (Yellow)– Confidence & Encouragement
The house of RELIABILITY (Green) – Honesty & Loyalty
The house of CREATIVITY (Orange) – Imagination & Inspiration
The house of COURAGE (Red) – Strength & Determination
The house of WISDOM (Purple) – Knowledge & Compassion

Kindergarten
Reading
We are still learning to identify uppercase and lowercase letters as well as the sounds they make. During reading lessons, we are focusing on identifying the major events of a story and asking and answering questions about the text.
Math
We are learning how to add within 5 and will start identifying 2D and 3D shapes along with describing where the shapes are by using positional words and learning the shapes attributes.
Science
We are still investigating with the five senses. We will soon be moving on to gravity and the day and night sky, where we will discuss activities done during the day and during the night.
Reminders
Practice sight words by making flash cards at home.
Practice writing short sentences with the sight words the students are learning.
Practice tying shoes with your child.
Second Grade
Second grade has made great strides from using and comparing linear measurement, to adding and subtracting using multiple strategies, to learning how to tell time. In writing, we have been focusing on writing an informative piece with an introduction, 3 facts, and a closing to tie it all together. Reading has integrated with social studies to introduce the U.S. Constitution with the Bill of Rights. Finally, science has been a discovery of soil and rocks in the earth science unit.
Remember students should read every night for 20 minutes and practice their basic math facts for our monthly math bees!
Third Grade
The year is off to a great start! It’s hard to believe that it is October already.
Please make sure your child is reading for at least twenty minutes each evening and completing a session of Success Maker Reading. Also, please continue to work on basic addition and subtraction facts with your child. It’s essential that your child have a solid understanding and recall of addition/ subtraction facts as we begin to dive into multiplication.
If you’re interested in volunteering in our class or chaperoning the May field trip, please let me know. More information about our field trip is coming soon! Remember, there is no school on October 15th. Thank you for your continued support.
