Message from the Superintendent
Dear Emery Unified School District community,
It is so exciting to see students, teachers, staff and families back at school. We had a very exciting start to the school year. We have lots of engaging programming planned for this year. Your participation in our schools as parents, guardians and community members is important to the academic achievement of our students and teachers. Thank you for your support and interest.
I would like to remind you that our district has an open-door policy. As your Superintendent, I am open to feedback. Please contact me if you have any questions or would like to talk about your experience at Emery.
Please continue to stay safe and stay connected with our school district. For the safety of our entire school community, I ask that you continue to stay aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity around our school campus. I thank everyone for your commitment to the wellbeing of our school community. We are in this together! Thank you for your collaboration.
Sincerely,
Dr. Quiauna Scott
Superintendent

Middle School Coding Classes
We are excited to offer a coding elective at Emery Middle School! Coding is also offered as an extra enrichment program after school. The coding class is taught by Mr. Somers.
7th and 8th grade students are working on a project called Newspaper Tower. Students were challenged to design a tower to hold a stack of books at least one foot in the air using only newspaper and tape. In this lesson, students were allowed to test a design, analyze the results, revise, and retest their design as part of the Problem Solving Process. They are learning problem solving skills, computational thinking, web development, interactive animations and games, and the design process using the Computer Science Discoveries curriculum created by Code.org.
6th graders are learning Coding with Scratch using the tutorials available on the Scratch website to learn about adding and coding sprites, backgrounds and music in their projects. They are studying Scratch and basic programming concepts such as logic and sequencing. This experience is teaching the 6th graders problem solving skills, which are essential for lifetime success.
Students are making amazing progress in the coding classes at Emery!
Safety
We encourage families to stay aware of traffic safety when dropping off and picking up your students. Please be very observant of your surroundings and avoid distractions. We also encourage parents and guardians to report any suspicious activity around the schools. If you see something, say something. We are committed to providing safe learning environments for our students, staff and families.
We encourage masks indoors. The school district will not have COVID-19 testing onsite. We continue to offer free antigen COVID tests to all students and staff as requested and/or recommended by health officials. We ask families to please keep kids home if they are showing symptoms of illness.
Expanded Learning Opportunities Program
This year, many students and families are taking part in Emery’s Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP). ELOP provides Academic Support to TK-8th grade students. Staff create a supportive environment and a quiet space for students to work on homework, study, or practice academic skills. The second focus of ELOP is Enrichment. Staff lead students in planned activities that include arts and crafts, STEM, sports, and themed activities. All students receive a nutritious snack provided by Emery Unified School District. Students enrolled in ELOP enjoy Emery’s campus facilities, including a sprawling turf field/track, pool and gym.
We invite you to learn more about ELOP! Visit the office at Emeryville Center of Community Life (ECCL) complex (94727 San Pablo Ave, Emeryville, CA. 94608) which also houses the Anna Yates K-8 School, Emery High School, EUSD District Offices and the Emeryville Community Services Office. For more information, contact Christen Gray, Youth Services Supervisor at 510-596-4396.
Updates from the MakerSpace Lab
Ms. Crichlow-Wright, Technology teacher, shares an update from the MakerSpace Lab!
“The furniture received for the FabLab is wonderful, students can collaborate with each other as partners and a group with ease. The furniture is sturdy enough so students can work on them without fear of damage to the tables.
During the summer, the lab received two new 3D printers for the MakerSpace classes, one of them a replicator and the other one a sketch. Presently, students are working on recreating a pen housing to place the ink cartridge into. Future projects include creating a utensil, a planter for a succulent, furniture for a small room, a famous bridge, to name a few.
We anticipate receiving four more replicators for a total of five replicators and three sketch 3D machines. I am excited for students to be able to print their creation, without waiting for a machine!”
Check out the student projects from the MakerSpace Lab!
Social-Emotional Learning at Emery
The Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE) and Emery Unified School District recently entered a memorandum of understanding. ACOE and Emery USD will establish a formal partnership as a part of the CalHOPE SEL Program. The goal is to implement systemic, Transformative SEL (Transformative Social-Emotional Learning, or T-SEL) into the existing community school model at Anna Yates Elementary, Emery Middle School and Emery High School.
The vision is to integrate Social-Emotional Learning strategies across disciplines to meet the needs of our students. Our district will collaborate with Alameda County to educate students on a variety of topics including human trafficking and provide suicide prevention training for teachers.
The Greater Good Science Center will help conduct an ongoing evaluation of the program via interviews and surveys with students, teachers, and parents. Emery will have a Social-Emotional Learning leadership team that will work with ACOE and Emery staff.
Emery Unified School District is excited to collaborate with Alameda County Office of Education and support Social-Emotional Learning efforts in Emery schools. The district is committed to caring for the whole-child. For more Social-Emotional Learning resources, please visit our website.
Emery is proud to offer Social-Emotional Learning opportunities to our students.
