Unit 3 Assignment 3
Databases and data mining systems
What is data mining?
What data mining does is look for patterns which are hidden in data groups which are then able to be used to predict behaviour in the future. An example of this is finding customers for retail companies which have common interests as the data mining software will go through groups of information and then find patterns which would pair up customers with companies. Data mining is also used to discover relationships in data which were unknown in the past. This method is more commonly used in mathematical and scientific situations however wider audiences are now finding ways in which this can be used in their fields.
What is a database?
Databases are used a lot today as there are an effective way of gathering information. Databases are used to collect information which is then stored on computers so that the computer system is then able to select pieces of data quickly. Databases are usually set up using fields, records and files.
