Dear Highland Park Parents,
Our district is happy to highlight the history and contributions of women in the United States throughout March in honor of National Women's History Month. Please take some time this month to celebrate and honor the many achievements of women throughout history!
Our window to change the instructional setting for the 4th 9 weeks has officially closed. We are expecting 504 students on campus, which is 73% of our students on March 22nd. We will continue to follow all District Covid safety guidelines. Our students' health and safety are our number one priority. Reminders on guidelines will be sent out to parents in next week's parent newsletter.
Have a wonderful weekend, and please do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions at all.
Warm Regards,
Lizbeth Ruiz
Principal
Morning Tutoring (3rd & 5th Grade)
The staff of Highland Park Elementary is striving to support our students in multiple ways including campus-wide tutoring. To help students who need extra instruction, and practice specific skills, we will be providing morning tutoring/enrichment for students. Students participating in morning tutoring received a tutorial letter last week.
Tutoring will be on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday beginning at 7:30 and will be incorporated into our instructional day that will last until 8:15 and will begin Tuesday, March 9. This instruction is extremely important to support student success.
For tutoring to be effective, it is very important that students attend tutoring for the entirety of the tutoring time. We ask for parents to have their child arrive at school on time and/or have virtual learners logged in at 7:30 AM.
Thank you for your support as we help our students grow.

Her help, along with all of the intervention team has been so amazing this year, especially with beginning and middle of the year testing. We appreciate you Ms. Kimbell!
Campus Humanitarian of the Year Nominations
- Nurse Christina - She was forced into the front lines with the pandemic. She has not complained even when having to make difficult calls and explain the ever changes guidelines. She has worked so hard to keep our campus healthy and safe.
- Coach Harvey- She leads her team well. Always has a smile and has to lead us thru some fun with the monthly challenges she gives us.
- Nurse Christina-It would be hard to list all the reasons 😊
- Ms. Clark- She truly is friends with everyone on campus. She can put a smile on your face no matter how you are feeling. She is witty and loving towards everyone she meets. She cares about every student she works with and goes above and beyond to help anyone who needs it. She takes care of her team and actively works to make sure we are all fed.
- Ms. Duong- Mrs. Duong should be Humanitarian of the Year because she always works so hard to show love and care for others. She has the biggest heart!

- Ms. Reyes-Mrs. Reyes has found a way to keep in-person and virtual students reading and checking out books! She has to quarantine the books for 7 days, which takes a lot of work. She even found a way to still do Library Lessons to give teachers that 30-minute break, and the students getting to still come to the library.
- Ms. Lowther- Karen always has a smile on her face and a positive attitude. She has been so kind and welcoming to me, personally. You can tell that she has a big heart and truly cares for her students and for her coworkers. She is always willing to help out and looks out for her fellow teachers. Her students adore her, too! She makes sure that even in this weird time we are in that they all are happy, learning, and have what they need.
- Nurse Christina-Nurse Christina continues to help ensure that HPES is a safe place for all students and teachers. She genuinely cares for each student and staff member who walks through the door. She checks in on kiddos who haven't been feeling well, and I am sure has spent many weekends and evenings contact tracing so that we can continue to come to school knowing that everything possible to keep our school safe is being done. Thank you Nurse Christina for all that you do!
- Ms. Reyes-Just seeing the way she is with the students, and how much they live her.
Campus Rookie of the Year Nominations
- Ms. Solomonson- What a crazy year for her to start. She has done it with a smile and is working hard to give the students a great music experience even in the midst of the pandemic.

- Ms. Solomonson- Sophie has come in as a first year teacher during a pandemic and has done a great job!
- Ms. Solomonson-Sophie is a great music teacher and my students love her! Despite this year being such a rollercoaster, she has handled it very well and I've been impressed with her this year.
- Ms. Solomonson- Being a first year teacher this year is an daunting task and Ms. S has taken on this role with a smile. My students LOVE to go to music each week and have already learned so much! HPES is lucky to have yet another amazing music teacher. Way to go Ms. Solomonson
- Ms. Solomonson-Every time I pass by the music room, students are engaged and excited about what they are learning.
- Ms. Vagalatos- She is an Amazing Interventionist.
- Ms. Solomonson- This person has quickly emerged into a veteran teacher in a year that many others would not be expected to achieve so much given the unprecedented circumstances. She has maintained a quality of leadership and stability that our students need in order to be successful. In a position that requires so much energy and guidance to an entire campus, it is difficult to see how this could be her first year in teaching. In many ways, being considered a rookie is almost unnecessary in Ms. Solomonson's case because of her composure, attitude and willingness to go above and beyond to positively impact Specials for her students.
- Ms. Solomonson- She has overcome many obstacles that we have faced this year with grace, dignity and a great attitude.
- Ms. Solomonson- Ms.Solomonson is very generous and helpful, she is also caring to our students and making sure they are successful in music.

COLD WEATHER RECESS POLICY
Children are expected to come to school prepared to participate in outdoor recess. Appropriate outerwear such as a hat, gloves and a warm coat are essential for healthy and safe outdoor play.

SUBSTITUTES/GUEST EDUCATORS NEEDED
PfISD is currently in need of more substitutes and guest educators, and we strive to provide the best possible qualified substitutes to ensure the quality of educators our students have. If you enjoy working with kids and can work on an on-call basis, being a substitute teacher may be for you.
To qualify to serve as a substitute in PfISD, you must be at least 21 years of age and have a high school diploma. If you hold a valid teaching certificate, are bilingual in Spanish or Vietnamese or have extensive skills/background in a high-need area, your qualification consideration is accelerated.
Applicants must complete an application online here.
STAAR INTERIM ASSESSMENT FAQ's
This year our campus opted to take the STAAR interim Assessment. This assessment will help us gather academic data and pinpoint areas for growth. As a campus we will analyze student results in addition to other academic data and make informed decisions on how to best support each student. It is important to note, this is only one piece of data we look at. Staff review multiple pieces of data for each student throughout the school year. Below are some common questions and answers about Interim Assessments.
The STAAR Interim Assessments are:
- a way to monitor academic improvement, especially for students who are consistently performing below grade-level,
- a tool to inform interventions for students or groups of students based on predictions of STAAR performance, and
- a benchmarking instrument.
- an item bank intended for building classroom quizzes and assignments,
- a source of test questions for tutoring or small-group instruction, or
- a classroom formative assessment tool designed to provide performance data on specific student expectations.
How are the STAAR Interim Assessments administered at school? The STAAR Interim Assessments are delivered in an online format through the STAAR Online Testing Platform (SOTP), the same platform students use to take STAAR summative assessments. To administer STAAR Interim Assessments, schools or districts should:
- check that their device and online network systems are adequate for testing
- install and configure the Secure Browser for testing devices
- review testing resources
- register students for interim testing
- print or distribute test tickets
- prepare students for testing.
What type of questions are on the STAAR Interim Assessments? STAAR Interim Assessments include test questions developed with Texas teachers and STAAR summative test questions from previous years. The test questions have been field tested and are fully aligned to the TEKS. The STAAR Interim Assessments use mostly multiple-choice questions and some griddable questions (in certain mathematics and science assessments only).

CHROMEBOOK DISTRIBUTION
Digital Library Books
We are fortunate to have digital books available through Sora and Epic. But, we are now offering a great opportunity to take a break from screen time and get printed library books into the hands of our virtual students.
It's easy! Students will log on to our library catalog and request books. I will pull books, email families, and arrange a pickup time. Pickup days will be Fridays and Mondays.
Please share with families:
WHO DO I CONTACT?
Every summer, there are staffing changes. Staff members move on to other opportunities, and new staff members join the campus. Before emailing a staff member from last school year, it would be wise to check with our front office staff. It is also a good idea to consider which staff member is your first point of contact for questions before you send your email. You may also call the front office at 512-594-6800 and ask for the person you need to speak with. I hope this information is helpful!

FACE MASK REMINDER
INCREASING CAPACITY & REMINDERS FOR THIS WEEK
We are ready to open our doors to a higher student capacity on January 6th. Our campus will have 434 students attending in person learning during the 3rd 9 weeks, this will place us at about a 64% building capacity. We will continue to do what is in the best interest of all students academically while adhering to all safety protocols. We will continue to follow ALL safety and social distancing measures we currently have in place.
Classroom teachers will reach out to all new "in person students" parents and communicate arrival procedures, supplies needed, and dismissal procedures, including how they will go home before Wednesday January 6th.
BE SURE YOUR CHILD HAS THE FOLLOWING
If your child is in PK-2nd grade please make sure they are wearing a name tag that includes the teacher name. This will help us direct them to their classroom.
Send your child with at least 2 clean masks (they can wear one, and keep one in their backpack in case they lose it, or something happens to the one they are wearing) We will have extras but we know children feel more comfortable with their own.
Send your child with a water bottle. Students cannot drink directly from the water fountains. They will be using the water filter system and water fountains to refill their water bottle as needed.
Students may purchase a lunch from the cafeteria or bring their own lunch. Please make sure to send a lunch bag with them as parents will not be allowed to have lunch with their child or drop off a lunch. This will minimize the exposure to the students and staff.
Students should bring their District laptop or iPad. Teachers will continue to utilize the online learning platforms to turn in assignments. Please make sure the device is fully charged, but still send the charger cord.

Please make sure to inform your child's teacher if there is a change in how your child will need to go home. 2:47- Pre K /Pegasus
2:50- 100 Hallway

Last, they will ask the car riders to sit down on the marked spots facing forward and car dismissal will begin.
DISMISSAL TAGS REMINDER
Every time we fail to follow procedures, we are less safe. With increased student enrollment is imperative that we follow procedures. Please continue being consistent with bringing/showing us your child's dismissal tag when picking them up afterschool. Remember the parent dismissal tag, must match the child’s tag. This goes for car riders also, please ensure that you have a tag displayed on the windshield when pickling your child up through the car lane. If you are missing a tag, please let your child's teacher know or call the front office so we can provide you with one.
