Big picture

Ready, Set, Kindergarten

Central will once again have a Ready, Set, Kindergarten program. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to gain school experiences and be exposed to many skills needed to do well in the classroom upon entrance of kindergarten.

This is a free program and will be offered at Central on Tuesday afternoons from 12:00-2:00 p.m. beginning September 18th.

For more information or to enroll your child, please contact RSKValpo@gmail.com. You will need to provide your child's name, date of birth, and home school. (Note: eligible children must have turned 4 by August 1, 2018)

Background Checks

Please be reminded that anyone wishing to attend school field trips, volunteer in the classroom, attend lunch, etc. is required to have a current background check on file. The process for getting these retuned and approved can be lengthy, so please allow two weeks for these to clear. If you are unsure as to whether or not your background check is valid, please contact the office.

If you are in need of a background check form, please let your child's teacher know and a copy will be sent home with your child.

Healthy Schools Policy

Did you know that Valparaiso Community Schools has guidelines regarding healthy food choices in our schools? To find out more details, you can click on the button below. You will find information about healthy food ideas, birthday celebrations, and procedures about eating lunch with your child. When sending in classroom snacks, please check with your child's teacher regarding possible allergies within the class. Thank you for your help in promoting a safe and healthy environment for our students!

Skyward Family Access

Don't forget to keep up with your child's progress using SKYWARD Family Access. Please visit the VCS homepage and click on the "Parents" tab, select "Skyward Parent/Student Access" on the right hand side and login using your username and password. You can also access Skyward by clicking on the following button.

Once you are logged on, you can access your child's grades by clicking on "Gradebook." You are also able to click on the letter grade for each subject area and you will see individual assignment scores.

Thank you for all you do to support learning at home!

The One and Only Ivan

The benefits of reading aloud are remarkable. Studies have shown that reading to children helps them to listen better and longer, to build bigger vocabularies, to understand concepts better, to feel positive about both books and learning – and much more.

This year, Central is participating in a school-wide book reading experience with the One School, One Book program (OSOB). This past Friday we had our kickoff assembly where the book was revealed, students were paid a visit from a special primate visitor, and every student and staff member received their very own copy of The One and Only Ivan.

As part of the OSOB initiative, Central would like to adopt a gorilla through the Brookfield Zoo Share the Care Animal Adoption Program. We are asking families to consider donating pennies, or other spare change that you may have (no bills, please), to this wonderful cause. The money will help provide food and shelter for our adopted gorilla at the zoo. As part of the adoption process, we will receive an adoption certificate, window cling, and photo of our adopted gorilla, in addition to knowing we are helping an animal in need. If you are interested in giving to this cause, please send in your coin donation in a plastic baggie labeled “Pennies for Primates” by September 20th.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Nurse Notes

Our clinic is in need of gently used clothing items. If your child has grown out of items that you are willing to part with, we will happily and gratefully accept them. We are specifically looking for girl and boy pants (all ages).

Over the next couple of months, vision and hearing screenings will be completed for students in grades 1, 3, 4 and 5. In the event that your child's screening requires followup, notification will be sent home. We appreciate your diligence in following up with these items as they can greatly impact your child's educational experiences here at school.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with further questions.

Thank you,

Mrs. Fisher

German Language Opportunity

Greetings from the German program at Valparaiso University! Again this year, we will offer our weekly, after-school German language program for children in grades 1-5 called Kinder lernen Deutsch. New this year is that we will accept beginners (and more experienced children) in grades 1-5.

This is an excellent and inexpensive opportunity for your students (subsidized by the university's endowed funding for German programs). Additional information and registration form is posted at ValpoLife.com (link below).
