Hawks Happenings

November 4, 2019

Happy November!

Can you believe how quickly the weather changed last Thursday night? Let's hope we are ready for cold temperatures and some snow!

We have turned on the heat at school now which means that we cannot turn the heat off or switch back to air conditioning should we have a 'heat wave'. Please encourage your child to dress in layers so they can self regulate their comfort throughout the school day.

It is important that students dress appropriately to be outside for recess even when it is cold. If you need help in providing your child a coat or warm clothing, please let us know.

Make sure to double check our Winter Weather information below so you can be prepared in case our county needs to alter the school schedule due to inclement weather.

Be prepared for Winter Weather!

Parents: We've updated our ❄️ Weather & Safety Info page to include inclement weather child care resources through the YMCA of Western North Carolina and Zaniac Asheville.

In order to use the YMCA during a school closure, you must register your student with a particular YMCA School's Out location PRIOR TO THAT DAY.

🏫 YMCA School's Out Locations:
• Hominy Valley Elementary (Enka)
• Charles T. Koontz Intermediate (Roberson)
• Haw Creek Elementary (Reynolds)
• Black Mountain Elementary (Owen)
• YMCA Youth Services Center (North Buncombe/Erwin)

The Zaniac School Closure Day Camp is available to kindergarten through eighth grade students for half and full day programs during inclement weather, early dismissal days, teacher work days, and many scheduled breaks. View our Weather & Safety page for more information.

📱 As always, we recommend using our BCS mobile app for the fastest access to district weather and safety decisions. Learn more: App.BuncombeSchools.org

A special note from PTO!

Our Wild West Fundraiser ended with a sMOOOOch!

Our incredible principals kept their promise to their students. We met our fundraising goal, which meant Mrs. Allison and Mr. Chandler had to KISS A COW!

The students chanted, "KISS THAT COW! KISS THAT COW!" And our principals are such good sports - they actually did it. Mrs. Allison even put on some extra lipstick first!!!

The students were delighted (and I think the teachers were too.)

Thank you to the NBHS FFA for bringing their friendly show heifer to our schools for the occasion. Thanks to BCS Communications for covering the event and providing some of these photos. And most of all, thank you to the incredible families of Weaverville Schools PTO for making this fundraiser so successful!

Our Free or Reduced Lunch percentage is still below the county average of 40% but since we still have many families who consistently owe money in the lunchroom, we do not think our current percentage is accurately reflects our level of need.
