Week 3: Violence in Media
A Note from the School Counselors (Mrs. W-Y & Mrs. Ventura)
Many times, we see students re-create scenes or act out aggressive behaviors that they have seen on tv or in a game. This week, we thought we would share some information that Common Sense Media has around the topic of Violence in Media.
“If you think there's a lot of violence in your kids' movies, games, and TV shows, you're right. Some studies show that media violence can be a risk factor for aggressive behavior and other negative outcomes. Parents should exercise caution to minimize exposure to violent content. Our advice can help you select age-appropriate content, wean kids off violent video games, and better understand the research on media violence.”
Check out the link below for the answers to some common parent questions around violence in media, such as:
“Does exposure to violent movies or video games make kids more aggressive?”
“What is the impact of media violence on kids?”
“How do I talk to my kids about violence on TV and in video games?”
Introducing Community Living and Learning
The Garnet Valley Special Education Department has established a Community Living and Learning program to support the development of students with special learning needs at the high school level. We have leased an apartment to provide an authentic learning environment for the students to acquire independent living skills, work skills, and life skills.
We are seeking donations from our Garnet Valley community to support and sustain the program. This support would include:
- Gift Cards to local grocery stores and department stores (Home Depot, Staples, Home Goods, Best Buy)
- Purchasing items at our Target Registry (Listed as Garnet Valley CLL Apartment)
- Direct cash donations through My School Bucks Click Here to Donate
Any donation size would be appreciated!!
We are also seeking a special donation of a transportation van to support our needs for work schedules and grocery runs.
For businesses who wish to donate $500, the company name will be listed on the district website. For donations of $1,000, the company name and logo or link to website will be listed.
Donations are Tax Deductible, and will be accepted at Garnet Valley School District, Attn: Community Living & Learning, 80 Station Road, Glen Mills, PA 19342
Please join us in our initiative to enhance the educational programming for our students with special needs.

CTC Quick Tip
Garnet Valley CTC Quick Tip #38
Did you know? “Two-thirds of youth ages 13 to 17 say losing their parents’ respect and pride is one of the main reasons they don’t smoke marijuana or use other drugs (Research Update, Preventing Adolescent Substance Abuse, Butler Center for Research, 2010). In Garnet Valley approximately 7 out of 10 students (74%) report that they are very close to their parent/care givers and share their thoughts and feelings with them. This protective factor is called Family Attachment. Family Attachment was one of Garnet Valley’s strongest protective factors. It has also been shown to be one of the most powerful means of keeping youth safe and successful (http://youth.gov/youth-topics/youth-mental-health/risk-and-protective-factors-youth).
Call to action… Keep your attachment strong this summer with the following 5 tips.
1. Build Connections and utilize summer fun to strengthen bonds,
2. Talk Early and Often about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs,
3. Reduce Access to alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs including prescription drugs in your home,
4. Monitor your Child’s Friends and Activities since youth will do what their friends do, 5. Know Current Drugs of Abuse – go to the website below. https://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/principles-adolescent-substance-use-disorder-treatment-research-based-guide/introduction
