PCSing? Call the SLO before you GO!
Other than summer, the holiday season or semester break is one of the busiest “PCS” season for military families. Trying not to disrupt student learning, testing, and participation in extra-curricular activities, many military families choose this time to PCS to a new duty station. If you are one of those families who is preparing for a PCS, remember the School Liaison (SLO) is available to assist you gather information about schools in other parts of the country and around the world. Through a network of SLOs in every branch of service military families are able to access information and services long before a PCS even begins.
As the educational expert for students in grade K—12, the SLO can help coordinate your educational move by offering information about registration, graduation requirements, and so much more. Don’t do this alone! If you have school-age children and your military family is facing another PCS, “Call the SLO before you go!” The information you receive will help you and your family manage getting services for students with special needs, obtaining copies of school records, and open lines of communication with the SLO and educators at the next duty station.
By calling the SLO early, you can avoid pitfalls and timing mistakes that can occur when moving between school districts with different registration requirements, testing calendars, and services. For more detailed information about the services offered by the Rota SLO call 727-2425 or write SLORota@eu.navy.mil. You’ll be SLO glad you did!
Expanded Eligibility for DoDEA Virtual School
ATTENTION ALL ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY dependents in grades 9-12 who are currently ineligible for the DoDEA Virtual High School (DVHS)!
The Expanded Eligibility Pilot Program is Accepting Spring Semester Applications
The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is accepting applications for the spring semester of the Expanded Eligibility Pilot Program (E2P2). This is the first year of a new program aimed at expanding eligibility for dependents of active-duty members of the armed forces to register for the DoDEA Virtual High School (DVHS). The E2P2 was authorized as part of the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, providing expansion of eligibility for DVHS to stateside active-duty military dependents in grades 9-12 who are currently ineligible for the DVHS.
In order to be eligible for the pilot program, students must be the dependents of active-duty military members who are serving in locations that do not have a DoDEA brick-and-mortar high school. Homeschooled students who are compliant with state laws are also eligible.
For the spring semester, new enrollments will be limited to students taking one-semester courses or students that have transferred in the middle of the school year and are unable to continue at their new school a course that is offered in the DVHS.
One-semester courses offered in the E2P2 are Java 1 & 2, Coding 1 & 2, Psychology and Economics. The full list of courses offered as well as the application can be found on the E2P2 webpage at www.dodea.edu/dvs/e2p2.cfm.
The program will be limited to 400 enrollments, split evenly among the four military Services, with priority given to students in the 12th grade. Students who participate in the pilot program can take up to two year-long courses per academic year and must obtain the approval of their local school system.
The DVHS is a fully accredited high school providing supplemental courses for DoDEA eligible high school students in grades 9-12. DVHS averages 2,500 course registrations per semester, with the majority of students taking either one or two courses per semester.
