News for this Week
On Tuesday the third grade students have Spectra. We also have our first intruder drill around 10:00 in the morning. The students will know prior to the drill, but at times it can be alarming for them when we practice safety drills. I will be at a training that day as well, Mrs. Bayer will be the sub for the day. Parent-teacher conferences will take place that evening until 8:30, during that time the book fair will be open.
Field day is on Wednesday. Our entire schedule is changed on this day, specials, lunches, etc. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. We will spend an hour and a half outside doing fun activities.
On Thursday the second grade students have Spectra. The third graders who are working on independent projects will be presenting. In the afternoon we have book fair buying for students who bring their money to school to purchase books. Parent-teacher conferences will take place that evening until 8:30, during that time the book fair will be open.
Fall break begins on October 11th and end on October 20th. The students return on Monday, October 21st.

First of all this week we do not have spelling:).... It's very exciting, because this will free up some time for the students to work on various projects they have going on in the classroom. The third graders have finished their book George's Marvelous Medicine and are working on dioramas to complete their book report. The second graders will finish The Boxcar Children and begin creating their diorama's for their book report. Our focus will continue to be on health until the end of the quarter, but we will not have any big projects taking place over the final four days.
Math
In Math the second graders will learn how to create a Power Point presentation. They will compare and contrast 2-D and 3-D shapes. The goal of this project is for the students to demonstrate their understanding of various geometric shapes, while learning how to create a basic Power Point that includes photographs (they have taken), transitions, some custom animation and bullet points about each shape. They will use Power Point later on throughout the year and geometric shapes will continue to be taught, so it's a win-win situation.
The third graders will continue their unit on geometry, ending with a unit test this week. They are also working through completing timed tests for the third grade level goal of passing an addition timed test in 5 minutes. Some of the students are working on multiplication and division timed tests, depending on what their level currently is in this area.
FYI: We will compete in the Noedic Math Competition during the second semester. If you are interested in practicing for this competition, check out their site they have many practice activities and assessments.
