Walker Elementary

Parent Newsletter for October 18-22, 2021

Dear Walker Families,

We will not have school on Friday, October 15th, or on Monday, October 18th.

Our students had a great week of learning at Walker. We are so proud of our Wildcats for choosing to work hard, play hard, and make great choices.

Walker Elementary will host a school-wide Book Character Parade on Friday, October 29th, at 8:15 a.m. Students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite book character. All students will carry their favorite book around for the parade. Parents are welcome to attend (we will have two parent viewing areas (outside by the 3rd and 5th-grade doors and outside by the kindergarten and 1st-grade doors by the gym). Students may choose any character from a book they enjoy following the guidelines in this letter. To support students’ feelings of safety and security in our building, violent or frightening costumes are not allowed. No weapons or dangerous-looking items will be permitted to accompany a costume. Here are some examples of acceptable costume choices, and some examples of unacceptable choices.

Important Reminders

Don't forget to...

  • If you choose for your child to wear a mask at school, please provide your child with a mask and a backup mask in the backpack.
  • COVID Updates: COVID notification rules are different. You will only be notified by the school if your child is determined to be a close contact. However, you can always check the Springdale Schools COVID reporting page to see the breakdown of active cases by building. Reach out if you have questions about this change.
  • Did you know that you can support our PTA with your Amazon purchases and/or by purchasing a membership to our local Sam's Club? More information is linked below.
  • We are looking for substitute teachers and bus drivers for the 2021-22 school year! If you are interested, please reach out to Mrs. Ryan or our district website for more information!
  • If your child arrives after 7:45 am, they need to be signed in to the office. You can scan the QR code on your car tag to do this; however, we ask that you still walk them to the front door. If students come up to the door by themselves and if no one is in the office, they are locked out. Thank you for helping us ensure the safety of all our Wildcats!
  • Breakfast is served every day from 7:15-7:45 and it's free. If your child has not tried our breakfast, remind them that they can come into the cafeteria any morning and eat breakfast before going to class.

We have an amazing group of classroom teachers. Check out the link below to read your child's grade level news and information.

Our job is to serve your child and your family! Please let us know if you have questions or need help.

Thank you for your partnership,

Mrs. Lynn Ryan, Principal, lryan@sdale.org

Mrs. Carrie Farris, Assistant Principal, cfarris@sdale.org

Asking for Help

Why do students struggle to ask teachers for extra help? Why do they sit in silence or confusion when raising their hand could bring help? Failure to ask for help can affect students’ academic performance, self-esteem, and potentially their access to learning in the future. There are several reasons why students struggle to ask for help, but the good news is that there are many strategies that can help them become stronger self-advocates for their learning. Here is an article from Edutopia that gives 5 strategies that can help parents with opening up the lines of communication with teachers.
