Professional Development Days
What happens on Professional Development Days? The value and purpose of these days are to provide all staff with an opportunity to learn, plan, train, and work collaboratively with colleagues and administrators within and across the District. In the process, staff members earn Professional Development Points (PDPs) in content and pedagogy toward their individual recertification.
Every Professional Development Day brings something new to learn, and this Friday is no exception. Through grant funding specifically dedicated to teacher quality and improvement, we have been able to secure workshop facilitators like Sarah Ward, M.S., CCC/SLP, and Co-Director of Cognitive Connections, LLP. Ms. Ward has over 25 years of experience in diagnostic evaluations, treatment, and the case management of children, adolescents, and adults with a wide range of developmental and acquired brain-based learning difficulties and behavioral problems. She will be at Tahanto facilitating a workshop focused on executive functioning and the middle school child for our middle school teachers, administrators, special educators, paraprofessionals, and support staff. At the high school, members of various departments will examine the curriculum for cultural and racial biases while others will focus on curriculum mapping and development.
At the elementary level, teaching staff in K-5 will learn from Sarah Gannon, an educational consultant from Crafting Minds, about the new guidelines on dyslexia distributed by the MA Department of Education this past year. Also during the day, our teachers in grades K-2 will continue their work in creating a scope and sequence for literacy based on the five foundational pillars of reading and the implementation of our new resources in phonics, phonemic awareness, and comprehension. Several of their colleagues in grades 3-5 will explore more about the pilot they are conducting on a new core literacy program for the upper elementary grades while others will focus on mathematics assessment and data with our mathematics coordinator.
Professional Development Days are essential to the continued improvement and expansion of teaching and learning. We are grateful for the opportunity to provide these days to our staff and to honor their professionalism and commitment to our students.

Food Service Supply Chain Challenges
As noted in last week’s update, these challenges are expected to continue for a while and may require meal substitutions with short notice. Please know that our cafeteria staff is doing everything that they can to minimize the impact on students. This has even included a couple of emergency grocery runs when a supplier was unable to fulfill an order as promised – a BIG THANK YOU to our food service workers. While they make it look effortless on the surface, they are paddling furiously below the waterline!

Dress for the Weather!
As the temperature cools and the weather turns wet it seems like an appropriate time to remind everyone that we try to get outside at every opportunity. This was the case before COVID but continues to be practice now as fresh air is even more important now. Please make sure to send your student in wearing layers and a rain jacket is appropriate. We do go outside in the drizzle (as long as you can’t see raindrops in puddles) and as long as the temperature remains above 20 degrees with the windchill.
As we are getting back into the swing of school and our old arrival process, I've noticed our tardies have started to rise a bit. Just a friendly reminder that the late bell rings at 8:25. After that time, if you are dropping off your child after 8:25, please walk them to the front of the building and sign them in. This ensures you won't get an absence call from the office and also lets us know if your child will need lunch from the cafeteria.
The Boylston Parent Teachers Organization (BES PTO) is a local non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote the relationship between home and school in order to enhance the education and social environment at Boylston Elementary School. Our mission is especially important at this time to help strengthen social connections in our school and community that have been challenged by the restrictions of the pandemic.
First Annual Pumpkin Festival
On Saturday, October 30th, from 3 PM-6:30 PM we are sponsoring the 1st Annual Pumpkin Festival for BES students and their families outdoors at the school. Tickets may be purchased in advance on Eventbrite.

Food trucks - Moe's Street Eats (cash only), Veronica's Coffee and Hot Chocolate, Jennifer Lee's Bakery, and Porcaro Hullistic Popcorn and Cotton Candy
Photobooth - Adults & children wear your Halloween costumes and take a family photo at our Halloween themed backdrop
Pumpkin Contest - Decorate a family pumpkin and bring it with you to enter our pumpkin contest for prizes
The event will raise money for the children's enrichment programs while helping to build a stronger community/school bond. The students will have the opportunity to volunteer to organize and run a carnival game with their class. Volunteering helps develop important social skills, sets them up for success in other areas of their life, and teaches them a sense of community and the power of gratitude and empathy.

The Worcester Railers Opening night game ticket deadline has been extended until 10/21. Another great opportunity to enjoy each other’s company as a school community.
The BEF golf tournament originally scheduled for today had to be canceled, however, the group is planning to have their first-ever Google Wobble on Thanksgiving morning. The wobble sounds more like my golf game anyways. Keep on the lookout for more information.
The Leo's club has asked me to share this flyer with all of you. They are collecting items for families in need. Heading into the holidays it seems like an appropriate time to be helping others.

Berlin Memorial School
Another busy week at Berlin Memorial!
On Monday we had our first PTL-sponsored cultural event of the year, with a visit from the group “Ill Style and Peace performed for our students. The program, which focused on bullying and self-esteem, was amazing, and the kids had a great time.
Thanks to PTL for this wonderful opportunity.
Hard Work Awards
We had our first all-school meeting of the year today. Held virtually (better safe than sorry) we talked about behavior on the school bus, mask-wearing & hand washing, and recognized students of the month. I miss the everyone together feel of all school events and look forward to their return.

SENIOR PORTRAIT: Senior Portrait deadline is October 19, 2021. There are 2 ways to submit senior photos and MUST select ONLY 1 OPTION.
Please submit your portraits to firstname.lastname@example.org and be sure to put your FULL NAME along with Senior Photo as the subject line. Your photo MUST BE in Portrait view as a JPG with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi and maximum file size of 20MB and should be 2 x3 in size.

Please note that for your child to participate in the Test and Stay program a student consent form MUST be filled out and signed by a parent/guardian. School districts must take attendance for every student, every period. If your child is absent from school please follow the procedures below:
Call (508)869-2333 and Press option 1 to report your child absent. If your child is absent due to a medical appt. (doctor or dentist) please bring a note to the main office from the doctor’s office the next day your child is at Tahanto.
If your child is going to be late for school please still call the above number and make us aware of this.
Each student has 3 parental excusals that can be used during each semester for absences that are not subject to a doctor’s visit. To use parental excusal please write a note and have your child bring the note to the main office on the next day your child is in person at Tahanto.
If your child is being dismissed from school, a written dismissal note must be handed into the main office by 8:00 a.m. Telephone dismissals will not be accepted.
If we do not receive a call notifying us of the absence, the secretaries in the main office will be contacting parents/guardians.

On Friday, October 1st, the varsity WB/Tahanto football team defeated Clinton High school by a score of 36-34. Tahanto students Bobby Humphrey ran for 117 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Jamie McNamara also added 1 touchdown. A key 28-yard reception by Jared Moulton set up Jamie McNamara, with under a minute left, to kick a 30-yard field goal to put the Lions up 2. The Lions are second-ranked in division 7 in the state currently. The Lions take on Tyngsborough at West Boylston high school tonight. - Friday, October 8th at 7:00 PM!

It’s time for the Tahanto Athletic Booster Club’s Annual Butter Braid and Cookie Dough Fundraiser! Help the Booster Club provide support to Tahanto Athletics!
The Butter Braid and Cookie Dough Fundraiser will run from 9/13/2021 to 10/15/2021. All forms need to be brought into the Main Office by 10/15/2021. Pick up will be on 10/25/2021, in front of Tahanto, after school. The sports team that sells the most Butter Braids and Cookie Dough will win a team pizza party sponsored by the Booster Club. The top 5 salespeople will get Tahanto swag with the top earner winning a Stags sweatshirt.
Important information regarding athletic transportation
Due to the bus driver shortage, NRT has informed us that they may have issues supplying buses to some of our games.
They will not know for sure until they organize the routes for any given week. Typically the routes for the following week are set by Friday. If there are issues for a given week, we will be as creative as possible to work through them, however, it could result in certain sports teams needing later starting times, or PPD of games to later in the season. We will do our best to deal with these situations.
