Message from the Principal
Dear Woodside Families, Students and Staff:
This is the season of many celebrations and recognitions of our students' journeys and their accomplishments. Part of our work as a community is to acknowledge both the good deeds and the troubling realities that face our local, national and global communities. As a Woodside HS Community, we deplore and condemn the racially motivated mass shooting that killed ten people in Buffalo, NY, on Saturday, May 14th. Today, before students watched their daily video announcements, we paused for a moment of silence to honor the victims of this senseless tragedy.
These final weeks are very full and there are simply too many activities and events to include them all here, but I do want to thank all our students who took one or more AP exams and giving it their best Woodside effort in the last two weeks. A big shout out to Mrs. Stephanie Finander, Mrs. Lupe Robles-Flores and IVP Cara Klackle for their tireless logistical work in organizing the exams and to support our staff and parent volunteers who served as test proctors who kept the students calm and supported throughout the testing sessions. We still have a number of make-up test sessions coming up, and we have a final push to get our state CAASPP testing completed by students who missed any session.
A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to our Woodside High School Foundation Auction Team and to all who generously donated toward this year's Fund-a-Need: "Elevating College and Career Readiness"! Please join me in extending a Woodside ROAR to Auction Co-Chairs, Megan Koch and Sue Ten and Committee Members: Aimee Armsby, Karen Brux, Jill Hannemann and Cindi Rutter. Additional thanks go out to Graphic Designer, Hilary Duwe and underwriter, Karen Seiko Peterson, and to our Foundation Co-Presidents: Katherine Gilpin and Mary Henry. The Goal was to raise $125,000 toward the Fund-a-Need, and preliminary accounting indicates that we met and exceeded the goal!! We will begin planning for college application essay bootcamps in the summer and college tours for the fall and spring and several new programs that will positively impact all students at WHS.
The Class of 2022 Commencement Ceremony is at 10AM on Friday, June 3 at Bradley Field.
Senior activities information can be found on the WHS Senior Information webpage.

In Woodside Sports News, congratulations to all our spring sports teams for a spirited season of successes, sportsmanship and growth! Several notable accomplishments:
- Boys Golf: Dylan Mack, 9th place and Bennett Yee, 11th place in PAL; Dylan represented WHS at CCS in Monterey with a score of 87!
- Girls / Boys Swimming/ Diving: Several underclassmen arrived at the Santa Clara International Swim Complex for two days of CCS competition and they stepped up for some speedy individual swims along with strong teamwork in the relays and a top ten place for junior diver Sophia Wells. Freshman Seth Collett dropped 2 seconds off his 200y Free seed time and earned a personal best time of 1:44.59; he was on fire in his 100y Back earning a 5th place medal with a time of 51.53. Sophomore Audrey Chang posted her fastest 50y Free with a 24.11, earning a 6th place medal and dropped more time on her 100y Free with a time of 52.49, while sophomore teammate, Edana Huang showed speed in the 100y Fly with 58.04, a 12th place finish and participated in a swim-off for 18th place in the 100y Breast, dropping more time, touching the wall at 1:07.19! Overall, the Girls team combined with diving and all the members on the relays earned 14th place out of 40 teams and our Boys team earned 25th, tied with district rivals, M-A. This team is only going to get faster and I predict 2023 State qualifiers!
- Girls Lacrosse: This team had a phenomenal season going undefeated into the WBAL championships against a tough St. Francis, suffering their first loss. They played hard and with heart in their opening CCS match against Mitty who overpowered us by 13-9--still, a fantastic season for these athletes, for some, it was their first year playing the sport!
- Track & Field: The Boys placed 2nd in PAL and last weekend in CCS prelim events in Gilroy, Nicky Hart (110m hurdles) and Nia Nau (triple jump) hit new PRs in their events. Fantastic end of season performances by Marco Parodi, Ethan Brooks and Maximilian Hohendorf! Luke Buddie placed 1st in high jump and Elle Marsyla placed 7th in the 3200m- both will advance to CCS finals next weekend. Good luck to Luke and Elle next week!
I promise to include updates for Badminton, Baseball, Softball, Boys Lacrosse and CCS Final news from Track and Field next week! There's just so much to share.
Finally, please be vigilant about health and safety as we have seen a rise in positive COVID-19 cases in our Bay Area, and in order for us to finish strong, please be proactive and stay at home and away from large gatherings if you experience symptoms. Masking is still voluntary; however, it is strongly recommended.
With Gratitude,
Karen van Putten

"The Mask You Live In"
Tuesday, May 17, 2022
5:30-7:30 pm
Free community event
Documentary film screening and discussion with
Ashanti Branch, Founder and Executive Director of the Ever Forward Club.
Hosted by San Mateo County Office of Education, Safe and Supportive Schools
Please join us for a Livestream of "The Mask You Live In," a documentary film about how we raise boys in America. This film looks at the damaging effects of our culture’s narrow definition of masculinity. Pressured by the media, their peer group, and even the adults in their lives, the boys and men in the film confront messages encouraging them to disconnect from their emotions, devalue authentic friendships, objectify and degrade women, and resolve conflicts through violence. These gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class, and circumstance, creating a maze of identity issues boys and young men must navigate to become “real” men.
After the screening, we will host a 30 minute conversation with Ashanti Branch, founder of the Ever Forward Club, who will share compelling efforts to reframe masculinity led by young men and answer live questions.
