News from the Abernethy Office
March 7th, 2023
From The Desk of Mrs. Dunn
Hello Abernethy Community!
This weeks newsletter is going to have a lot of information in it! As we start looking at all events that are coming up in the next few months I find myself getting pretty excited! We are looking forward to:
3rd Grade Music Concert
Spring Open House
Tour de Ladd
Kinder and 1st Grade Music Concert
And this is just the beginning! We still have our end of the year events that are too sad to mention right now. Not sad, as I do not like them, but sad because they mark the ending of this school year. This year has been an amazing year! So many great things happening in and around us! I am having a hard time thinking about the school year ending. However, with that being said, I am looking forward to the end of the school year events such as:
5th Grade Promotion
5th Grade Clap Out
As we get closer to these events we will share more information.
Classified Appreciation Week
This week we are so happy to celebrate, appreciate and highlight all our classified staff members in Classified Appreciation Week. I can't begin to express how much all our staff members do for our school, but specifically thinking about our classified staff members, we could not keep the school running without them! Let me just tell you a little about them.
Elise Darling, Christine Olsen and Sabrina Hill
These 3 amazing women make up our secretarial staff in the office. They keep our school in line with budget and accounting, attendance, enrollment, CUB's, field trips and all other staff and administrative needs. I know I am leaving out so much that they all do, as their list is so long!
Bethany is a master of all trades! She supports students throughout the day with all medical needs, covers in the health room, works in the office, supervises lunch and recess and jumps in where ever she is needed!
Laurie Vella, Kevin Jones and Lauren Adams
These three individuals are the absolute most amazing paraeducators a school could every have! They show up every day and work one on one with students! They support the work being done in the classroom and make it so that our students all have access to everything and anything our school offers! They have smiles on their faces and can brighten your day just by saying hello!
Megan Shupp and Melissa Monroy
Oh my goodness! What a year to work in the health room! These two fabulous individuals hold down the fort with all sicknesses and injuries. They are not afraid of blood and vomit and for that I appreciate them more than they will ever know! You don't really know the power of an ice cube until you see the attention that Megan and Melissa give to any scrape, bump or just an "it just hurts".
Scott Brewer, Roderic Stephens and Kelly Hendrix
There are no words that can be used to describe how much these three do for our school. They are constantly being pulled here and there. The saying "Clean up on isle 4" does not come close to what they hear.... "We have an immediate need in the upstairs bathroom", "There is a spill in room# 4" and "We have a code vomit in the downstairs hallway" are just a few that have come across the walkie Talkies this year. On top of all that, they make sure that our school is safe for students to enter into every day and that our playground is ready for paly every morning.
Barb single-handedly serves breakfast and lunch to all students who have school lunch. Thursday...Pizza Day.... it is no joke how many students go through her line! She not only prepares all food but she knows every students who walks through her lunch line, connects with teachers when she notices that there is something off with a student and puts so much love into all that she prepares and serves to our students.
We have had such a fun week so far celebrating them!
Celebrating Black History Month
This is such an impressive work of art done by the 4th grade classes.
The Patchwork Path tells the story of a two of the thousands who escaped a life of slavery and made the dangerous journey to freedom. It’s a series of hidden clues that will guide you along the Underground Railroad to Canada., a fictionalized account of fascinating oral history.
Ms. Arthurs's Class Presentations
It was so fun to be able to see the students in Ms. Arthurs class present their final projects to their families and then again to the 3rd grade.

The Abernethy PTA is thrilled to announce the return of the social event of the season! Join your Abernethy friends and neighbors to help support Abernethy while having fun.
The “progressive house party” will take you on a tour of backyards and gardens, each with food, drinks, and auction items such as gift cards, wine, and homemade items.
The Main Event will be a live auction at 1600 SE Division- complete with big ticket items to bid on, classroom projects from every classroom, and of course more food and drink! Finally, end the night with an after party and a nightcap.
Reserve a babysitter soon since even though the auction benefits our kids, this party is just for the grown-ups!
Ticket information available soon. If you are interested in volunteering or donating an item, please email email@example.com.
Tour de Ladd is on Wednesday, April 12, 2023!
The annual Abernethy bikeathon is pedaling to a street near you on April 12, and we need you to help make it happen! We are especially seeking volunteers during the day to help keep our young cyclists and scooterers safe and hydrated.
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you are able to help before or during the event. More information to come, including pledge forms, routes, and all the details of another memorable day of cruising ‘round the neighborhood!
Bottle Drop Funds for P.E. Equipment
To help Ms. Hartle and improve the quality of the equipment our students use during P.E. class, funds raised through the Bottle Drop program will be directed specifically to purchase gym equipment.
You can support this initiative by recycling redeemable cans and bottles through the BottleDrop program. Simply request blue BottleDrop redemption bags via Konstella or email, fill it with your redeemable bottles and cans, and take it to any BottleDrop site. Scan the sticker to unlock the door, drop in your bag(s), and you're done! Learn more on the PTA website.
Budget Process Starting: Make Your Voice Heard
The PTA is beginning to work on next year’s budget and we’d love your input! If you have ideas, concerns, or questions about how next year’s funds are being allocated, please email email@example.com, come to the General Meetings (schedule here), and become a dues-paying PTA Member to vote on the budget (sign up here).
