Levy Discussion at Bridle Ridge March 6
Dr. Al Voelker, Assistant Superintendent, and Cyndee Byous, Chief Financial Officer, will attend the PTA meeting at Bridle Ridge tomorrow, Tuesday, March 6, at 6:30 p.m., in the Library Media Center. During that meeting, Dr. Voelker and Mrs. Byous will explain and answer questions about Proposition R-P, which will show up on the April 3 ballot.
The Raymore-Peculiar School Board on Jan. 18 unanimously approved placing a 75-cent operating levy increase on the ballot for the April 3 election. At the same time, the debt service tax rate is scheduled to decrease by 30 cents, resulting in a net tax rate increase of 45 cents. A simple majority is required to approve the measure, which will be identified as Proposition R-P. If approved, the additional revenue would be used to support key elements in the recently approved Strategic Plan. These include:
Incorporating additional real-world, hands-on learning opportunities and promoting soft-skill development
Expanding Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) opportunities for all students
Expanding mental health supports for students and staff
Establishing a market-competitive salary and benefit plan
Investing additional resources in facility maintenance and upkeep

Safety and Security at Bridle Ridge
Entry
At Bridle Ridge, we have a secured vestibule in our entrance that is locked at all times. Entry is only obtained through someone in the office releasing the door manually. All doors in the entire building remain locked during school attendance hours. This includes the double doors that lead to the pods and double doors that close in both hallways down by the cafeteria.
Classrooms & Staff Prep
All classrooms are equipped with 15 feet of para cord and a boat cleat positioned next to the classroom door. If in a lock down situation, staff members are trained to tie down their locked doors with para cord and create a "bridge" from the door to the wall with furniture to prevent the door from opening. Staff in the district participate in violent intruder training which involves learning about the psychology of an active shooter, how to tie down doors, create layers, the best items to use for weapons, how to make the decision to run or hide, how to fight and how to train kiddos to follow directions quickly and accurately. We do not involve our students in active shooter training.
Student Prep
We regularly practice giving students assertive directions that they are to follow quickly and accurately so that in a crisis situation, they can respond immediately to directions for safety. We also involve students in regular drills called, "restricted movement," where we shut and lock all doors and students practice sitting quietly and following teacher directions quickly and accurately. We also practice evacuation drills to exit the school quickly and safely (fire drill for instance). During any of these drills (or otherwise), we do not talk to kiddos about active shooters or tie down doors in front of them, which could create undue stress and worry in our kiddos. Rather, we focus on using our own executive functioning skills & training knowledge to stay calm and think quickly to exude a feeling safety and security for our students. We also teach these same self regulation skills to students daily so they are equipped to handle big feelings and stressful situations calmly.
Collaboration w/Law Enforcement
On Tuesday February 13, all principals and district office officials met with the Peculiar and Raymore Police Departments to review our crisis plans. We discussed immediate response plans, communication, safety, evacuation and the unification of students with their families following a crisis situation. I have been nothing less than impressed by how the Raymore-Peculiar school district, our Superintendent, Dr. Monsees, and our neighboring police departments have prepared principals and staff members to respond in a crisis situation.
Although I pray often that we never experience the tragedy of a school shooting or a traumatic event at school, I feel confident that the staff and I are prepared mentally and physically to protect our kiddos through such an event.

Box Tops for Education
Itchy Head? Know the facts.
You can help deter the spread of lice by checking your child for signs of head lice or nits. Nits, or lice eggs, may be brown, light grey or white and are oval-shaped. They resemble dandruff or sesame seeds, but cannot be flicked or shaken off the hair strand easily. Remind your child not to borrow or loan hats, combs, brushes, headphones, or other personal items.
If head lice or nits are found, your child should be treated with a lice product available over the counter at any drugstore. Follow the product directions exactly. After the treatment, it is important to remove all nits. This can be done with a special lice comb, scissors or your fingernails. Your child may return to school when he or she is lice and nit free.
There are many misconceptions about head lice. Learn the facts at: https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/lice/head/gen_info/faqs.html
