Volume 2, Issue 16 - November 30, 2018
Dear Families,
The Diversity Committee has chosen the Giving Theme for December. Winter months are filled with many giving holidays including Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and the Chinese New Year. We are celebrating giving this month by adopting the Welcome Home organization. Welcome Home helps support homeless veterans. We are challenging each advisory family to accept the challenge to fill a brown paper bag with goods for the veterans. Please check with your student next week to see what area their advisory decides to help out with. We will be accepting donations through December 14th.
Thank you in advance for your generosity!
Ugly Sweater Fridays
Can you believe that it is December already??? This school year has been great and we have your kids to thank for that. Fridays in December have traditionally been a time to wear holiday/ugly sweaters to school. Our staff would like to invite students to participate in this activity. Sweaters must be school appropriate and more festive/ugly the sweater is, the better. Hats are not allowed! Let your kids dig through the closets to find those fun holiday clothes to wear to school on Fridays! We can’t wait to see their attire!
Advisory Week Dec. 3-7
During the week of Dec 3rd to Dec 7th we will address “Healthy Choices”. This week will be increasing Gentry students knowledge on making health choices and benefits associated with them. We will also encourage students to make smart choices and how to say NO to unhealthy behaviors with confidence.
Monday: Silent Sustained Reading
Tuesday: Advisory Lesson (Healthy Choices)
Wednesday: Academic Day!
Thursday: Advisory Lesson (Staying Healthy)
Friday: Academic Day!

Medication Safety Tips
With the holidays upon us and kids at home more, sometimes less supervised, I want to remind everyone of some general medication safety tips. Please remember however, that these are good for ALL times, not just the holiday season!
- Put all medicine up and away and out of sight, including your own
- Close medicine caps tightly and again, put away after every use
- Keep all medicines in their original packages and containers
- Take time to read the label and follow directions even if it seems familiar
- Keep track of your medicine-count the pills occasionally to account for all doses
- Educate your pre-teen/teens on how to read medicine labels and prescriptions
- Communicate to kids the importance of only taking medicine that is meant for them. Taking medicine that belongs to someone else or misusing medicine (even over the counter meds) can cause harm
- Medicine should not be taken without the supervision of an adult; check in with your pre-teens/teens and talk about medicine they are taking regularly; communicate with them often about taking medicine responsibly
- Dispose of medicine properly; dissolve pills and pour into a sealable plastic bag; add kitty litter, sawdust, or coffee grounds to the bag to make it less appealing for anyone to take
Some prescription medications are frequently abused and misused. Most students who misuse or abuse these medications get them from a friend or relative. They think these drugs are safe to use because they are prescribed by doctors. But taking someone else’s medication is dangerous!!
Reminder of our district medication policy- middle school and high school students:
- Students ARE permitted to carry over-the-counter medications (examples: pain reliever, cough drops, antihistamines) and prescriptions (example: antibiotic), but only under these guidelines:
*All self-administered medication must be in a properly labeled container: prescription bottle or over-the-counter medication in the manufacturer’s container. Students may only carry the amount needed for one school day. They may not share medication with other students.
- If a student uses or carries an asthma inhaler during the school day, we are required to have an asthma action plan on file in the nurse’s office. Some physicians can provide this plan for their patients or blank plans are available in the nurse’s office.
