NOTES FROM THE CCSA BOARD
The fall weather has arrived, students have settled into their new routines and classroom expectations, and the 2018-2019 academic year is well underway. The Classical Charter School Association (CCSA) board has also begun its efforts toward meeting its goals for the year. Those goals can be found in our school's strategic plan which is the roadmap we have developed for keeping us focused on those activities that will be most beneficial for the success of Classical School. This plan is carefully revised each spring with input from all stakeholder groups including Classical School staff and parents. Below is a brief summary of the key components of our plan for this year.
Strategic Goal #2 - Maintain staff member effectiveness to avoid obstacles to and/or interruption of well-established, high quality instruction practices.
Our school is fortunate to have many veteran staff members who have been part of the Classical family since its early years. It's our goal to capture as much of their knowledge as we can to ensure all of our class' valued methods and content are transitioned as seemlessly as possible. It is also important to continually assess how technology can be used as a tool to improve on the the delivery of our curriculum.
Strategic Goal #4 - Advocate for charter laws that protect and grow the mission of Classical School.
Most years there are opportunities for the state of Wisconsin to receive federal funding or grants for Charter Schools. Many times these come with expectations for certain Charter School standards that do not always mesh well with our state or our district. Each year our board works to advocate for our school to our local representatives and works with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and the Appleton Area School District to ensure that we are meeting our school's obligations and are prepared for the expectations of the future.
Strategic Goal #5 - Engage in cyclical curriculum review to ensure full coverage of the Core Knowledge Sequence, best practices in the classroom, continuity of the program, and the opportunity to further develop expertise through professional development.
Reviewing and updating curriculum is vital for the success of our school and is at the center of our strategic plan. Significant changes have been made in recent years to strengthen our writing program in grades 5-8 and our middle school science program. This year we will remain focused on both of these programs assessing how well each is meeting its goals and fine tuning where there is opportunity. We are also taking a look at our math program's emphasis on mastery of foundations such as math facts. Students who lack this end up working harder through each problem which likely slows them down and makes focusing on the new content more challenging. We hope to bolster our support of the basics ensuring that those are not hindering students as they work through more challenging concepts.
We encourage all parents to read the full plan and bookmark it so you can keep up to date on our progress. The Strategic Plan and CCSA Board meeting agendas and minutes can be found at the following link- http://www.classicalcharter.com/about/leadership/. We always welcome parents to join us in supporting Classical School by volunteering on either the Marketing/Alumni relations or Fundraising/Grant Writing Committees, attending a board meeting, or becoming a board member. We thank all of those who continue to contribute in any way they can!

Drop Off and Pick Up
If you park across the street or farther away from the grassy area near the ball diamonds, we ask that you escort your child across the street or parking lot.
Though it is tempting, waving your child to come to you across a street is unsafe and has caused a few "close calls" in the past. We also ask that you refrain from taking/placing cell phone calls or texting during drop off/pick up after kids have been released while you are in the school zone.
NEWSWORTHY ODDS AND ENDS
All students in Grades 7-8 should be on the blacktop/playground area by the 7:45 a.m. bell. Students must be in their classroom seats by the 7:50 a.m. bell.
Students in Grades K-6 should be on the blacktop/playground area by the 7:45 a.m. bell. Students are to be in their classroom seats by the 8:00 a.m. bell.
School Security -- Adults in the School Building
We ask all parents to drop off their children and pick them up on the playground. Please remember that school is in session earlier and later for our 7th and 8th grade students. We need to keep our building secure for our students between the school hours of 7:30 a.m. -- 3:15 p.m.
To ensure safety all adults need to sign in at the office and wear a visitor's badge. Staff is required to stop all adults without a badge and escort them to the office.
Pegasus Flyers, Classical Columns, the Classical Website, and Facebook
Classical School uses several communication vehicles for valuable school information:
Pegasus Flyer
The white envelope that typically comes home on Thursdays (Gr.K-8) is called the “Pegasus Flyer”. Important notices and school papers are sent home in this envelope weekly.
Classical Columns
The Classical Columns, the school’s newsletter, is typically published once a month and emailed home at the end of the month. Please take time to read this important publication as you will find answers to what is up and coming, an address from our principal, information on CCSA Board work, club and activities updates, school calendar, and much more! If you would like a hard copy, you may pick one up outside the school office attached to the bulletin board.
Classical School Website
If you haven’t had a chance to visit our school’s website lately, please do so! It is an excellent resource for current and prospective families who would like to learn more about classical education and the Core Knowledge Curriculum! Visit the website for teacher biographies, enrollment information, and so much more! www.classicalcharter.com.

FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE: Influenza and What You Need to Know
Influenza (also called flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. Flu viruses are spread in respiratory droplets caused by coughing and sneezing. They usually spread from person to person, though sometimes people become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.
Symptoms of flu include:
· Fever
· Headache
· Extreme tiredness
· Dry cough
· Sore throat
· Runny or stuffy nose
· Muscle aches
The best way to prevent the flu is to be immunized against the flu. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) recommends Influenza vaccination for children 6 months through 18 years of age. Vaccine is available as nasal spray or injection. Immunizations are available through physicians, public health, and at many local sites. Flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May, so it is not too late to be immunized!
Other ways to help stop the spread of flu viruses:
· Wash hands often
· Stay home when you are sick
· Avoid close contact with people who are sick
· Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
· Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
People need to get plenty of sleep and physical activity, drink water and eat good food to help them stay healthy in the winter and all year. Be proactive in protecting your health! Discuss the flu vaccine with your health care provider to determine if it is right for you and your family. For more information, please go to http://www.flu.gov/# or contact your healthcare provider.

Quiet Zone Near MS Wing after School
Be aware that 7th and 8th grade homerooms remain in class until 3:00, while K-6 grades are out of school by 2:49. Please do not stand near the school windows that border the playground during elementary pickup. Adult conversations can be heard even through the closed windows and are a great distraction for our 7-8 grade students. If you would like to converse with other parents at elementary pick-up, please step away from the MS classrooms. Thank you!
Student Openings Available in 6th, 7th & 8th Grade
Classical School currently has openings in our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes for the 2018-19 school year. If a grade level is full at the time of application, the student will be placed on that grade level’s waiting list in the order their application is received. Families will be contacted as soon as possible with their student’s status. Please share this information with anyone you know who may be considering another option for 6th, 7th, or 8th grade this school year.
Please note: We do not currently have any openings in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade, and there are waiting lists at all of those grade levels. If you know of a student interested in grades K – 5, please contact Joanne Bielmeier at bielmeierjoann@aasd.k12.wi.us to have that student added to the end of the waiting list
From the desk of Mrs. Kemps
Grades 7/8: Homework is collected in file folders in Mrs. VanRyzin's room (Room 122). Her room will remain unlocked until 6:00 p.m. as well.

7th/8th Grade Students Participating in WIAA Athletics
Classical School is happy to be participating in Middle School Interscholastic Athletics with Einstein Middle School again this school year. Classical 7th/8th grade students’ school day ends approximately 20 minutes earlier than Einstein 7th/8th grade students’ school day.
- When your child’s sport is “in season”, they should report to room 124/125 at Classical School by 3:05. A Classical paraprofessional supervises the athletes at Classical until Einstein dismissal.
- Classical School is responsible for supervising the student athletes until they arrive at Einstein for practice/games. Students should bring their jackets and homework to room 124/125 and plan to work on homework during this supervised time.
- An after-school snack for your student athlete is highly recommended!
- At 3:20 p.m. a paraprofessional will escort the athletes over to Einstein. Parents, plan to pick up your student athlete from Einstein Middle School after his or her practice ends.
Classical/Einstein Upcoming Fall Athletic Teams
7th/8th Boys' Basketball
The Einstein/Classical boys' basketball season is just around the corner! Sign up is taking place in the Classical School office until October 5th.
Try outs begin on October 8th at Einstein. All potential players MUST have an updated physical or alternate year physical form on file in the Classical School office prior to the first day of practice. You will not be able to practice unless you have the proper forms turned in. forms can be picked up from the Classical School office or print them from the AASD website: http://www.aasd.k12.wi.us/parents/athletic_forms.
Treats and Snacks in the School Setting
The Appleton Area School District continues to update practices that provide our students with a safe, welcoming, and healthy environment. As part of these efforts, the AASD School Wellness Policy Committee recently updated School Wellness Policy 458 in order to align our school wellness procedures with best practices.
Starting the beginning of the 2018-19 school year, birthday and other celebrations during the school day will not include students bringing in snacks from home to share and will instead take place through non-food practices.
Recognizing students ways that better support overall student wellness also has a variety of positive benefits:
Reduced social and economic pressures on families to provide celebration snacks
Increased cultural awareness for families with respect to birthday and other celebrations
Avoidance of unintended consequences related to food allergies and decreased complications for students with medical issues
Knowing this is a change from past practices, we understand that part of the process is learning together the many ways we can still honor and recognize our students without the incorporation of food items.
Together, we will continue to ensure that we are implementing best practices that focus on increased student wellness for every child, every day in the Appleton Area School District.
If you have any questions about this policy, please reach out to Mr. Bomann.
