March 14 Community Meeting
Please review our presentation (which includes responses from our meeting activities) and our draft FACE plan. Once you have reviewed these documents, please share your feedback to help us determine where the school and PTO should focus our efforts and energy for the 2018-2019 school year. As you review the draft FACE plan you will notice that there are many activities listed. Some activities are currently supported (and may need to be enhanced) and some are new. Your feedback will help us create alignment and focus our efforts.

Sneak Peek - April Link 2 Learning
The Leader in Me is Franklin Covey’s whole school transformation process. It teaches 21st-century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader.
Holmes school teachers will be engaging in a book study of The Leader in Me and invite our families to join in our learning.
Be sure to mark your calendar and we hope to see you at our next Community Meeting on 4/11 at 8:15am
Spirit Week - 3/19-3/23

Drop Off Safety Concerns
DROP OFF RULES:
When dropping off on Chicago Avenue, please pull forward to the furthest available spot, allowing room for others to pull in behind. Taking the first and closest opening to the gate causes traffic to back up causinf unsafe conditions for students who are crossing and cars attempting to drive west on Chicago Avenue.
Student safety is our number ONE priority! Please be respectful to school staff and your fellow parents.
Set a good example for your child and follow traffic laws. Letting your child out in the middle of the street, even when traffic is stopped, will result in a ticket from OPPD. Use our drop off zone and do not drop students in unauthorized areas.
Not following the drop off protocol can cause many problems including harm to a child or an accident. Please be mindful and careful and remember the safety of our children is most important. Traffic is busiest beginning at 7:50 am. Please consider having your children come earlier - we serve breakfast in the lunchroom daily.
Kenilworth is closed to traffic at drop-off and pick-up. Please do not drive past the signs stating that the road is closed. Students can be dropped off on Chicago Avenue. You can also park on Kenilworth, north of Iowa, or on Woodbine and walk your child to school.
Celebrate Holmes Staff
Families, have you noticed a Holmes teacher or staff member who deserves a compliment or a thank you? Has this person made a difference for your child? Please share the reason in a brief email to me (czelaya@op97.org) so that we may recognize and thank them!
A FEW NOTES FROM YOUR PTO…
We received positive feedback from the community and must thank all who worked to make the evening possible: school staff including many teachers, all the performers, the sharing station organizers, the families who brought food as well as the many volunteers who set up, those who helped during the event with check-in, food, etc. as well as everyone who stayed a little longer to help with clean up.
Our aim is to make these events welcoming and rewarding experiences for all members of our community and so the organizers are interested in feedback as well as volunteers for future events. If you think we could try something different next time around (any Holmes PTO event or the ITOH in particular) and/or would like to be involved in future events, please contact PTO Social Committee Chairs, Afshan Syed (afshan.syed@gmail.com) and Nicole Sumida (sumida.nicole@gmail.com).
Students in grades 1-5 are welcome (but not obligated) to participate. The first round will be held in classrooms.
Keep an eye out for preliminary grade level lists and information coming home in folders soon! Reviewing words is a great way to keep the learning going over spring break.
Week of March 19: Prelim word lists distributed to students
April 2-13: Prelim rounds to be held in class
April 16 (Mon): Final word lists distributed to students
April 24 (Tues): Final round for finalists in each grade (1st - 5th) (6pm start time)
