10% Parent Feedback Letter and Action Plan
I hope the transition back to school has been smooth for your child(ren) and they are enjoying getting to know their classmates and teachers while engaging in exciting learning experiences!
I wanted to take a moment to revisit this brief message that I shared in our back to school mailing regarding our plan to respond to the feedback provided in the 2018-2019 Parent Survey:
Thank you for taking time at the end of last year to complete the 2018-2019 Parent Survey. We value our partnership and are committed to responding to concerns. One identified area of focus is providing your child(ren) with academic support when needed. We are excited to grow in this area and this focus will fit nicely with our plan to utilize math workshop approaches, create a math intervention block, and expand our enrichment opportunities.
In an effort to grow our practices and meet the needs of students and families in this area we have created a plan to address this in a few ways:
Create FAST (Focused Academic Support Time) block for each grade level to support all learners.
Provide differentiated and individualized instruction during reading & math FAST block.
Work collaboratively with parents and students to set individual growth targets.
In order to develop individual growth targets for your child(ren) we are sending home a form with academic indicators for you to identify areas of desired growth. We ask that you please complete this to the best of your ability and bring back to the Share Your School event on September 25th. Teachers will share progress on these goals at parent teacher conferences in the fall and spring.
Last year we had 160 responses to our survey. We want to grow this number to ensure all families’ voices are heard. Through this action plan we are aiming to meet the following goal:
As evidenced in responses from the 2019-2020 Parent Feedback Survey we are aiming to move the percentage in the “Always” category to 70% while eliminating the 3.1% “Infrequently” and 1.9% “Never”.
Best,
Andy Gonzalez

Our Learners Beyond the Walls of Our School
We understand that school is only one part of our learners' lives. We are interested and look forward to celebrating achievements/events that take place within our community and demonstrate our Profile of the Graduate qualities--Imagination, Confidence, Teamwork, Wonder, Caring. Ride For Free
On September 7th, second grader, Erica Krasnitski, rode her bicycle 25 miles in the Closer to Free cancer bike ride. Erica participated in this event in honor of her mother who is a breast cancer survivor. Erica also raised over $500 through a bake sale and lemonade stand to go towards the cause. Erica says the best part of the day was being able to cross the finish line next to her mom. Memorial School is so proud of you, Erica! #Caring&ConfidenceInAction

News from Physical Education
Hi everybody!
We are off to another exciting year in PE and hopefully a great fall outside, so far so good!
Pre K has PE once a week and the children are doing a really nice job.
K , Gr. 1, Gr. 2, and Gr. 3 all have PE twice a week for 45 min. each class.
All PE classes begin with a welcome and short discussion about our goals and objectives for the day. Strength, power, and flexibility exercises follow with a strong emphasis on proper technique and giving our best effort. After the warm up part of our lesson, we move into the aerobic fitness component of our lesson, which would be our running (in the fall we are outside on our running track, in the winter months, we are in the gym).
Pre K and K will be focusing on movement skills (running, skipping, galloping, sliding hopping, jumping), as well as foot skills with the soccer balls.
Grade 1 will review movement skills and work on running on the running track. Foot skills and soccer skills are introduced and practiced, such as passing, receiving, dribbling, juggling, throw in’s, and some fun skill games.
Grade 2 and Grade 3 start working on their Fitness Clubs, the first of which are the Running Club and Mile Run/walk Club. We review foot skills and soccer skills and introduce small sided activities that we play outside. We also introduce various indoor soccer games when we can’t go outside due to the weather. The children are also introduced and start using the Fitness Lab when we are inside (we will continue to use the Fitness Lab throughout the winter and early spring).
We look forward to seeing you at Share Your School Night in Sept. and at Gym Night in Nov.!

News from the Music Room
Hello Cheetah Families!
I am so excited to see all of our students’ smiling faces in the music room again! Preschool and kindergarten students have been learning routines in the music room, practicing names, and using singing voices and dancing bodies! First, second, and third graders have been reviewing routines and learning from the previous year, while playing fun music games together. Students have also started to learn how to use our “resting spot” to calm their bodies and be ready to learn! Throughout the year, I will occasionally post pictures and updates to the music room website. Preschool song lyrics and poems can be accessed there as well so that you can sing with your student! When we start our recorder unit, third graders will be able to find resources there as well. +Be sure to check it out by clicking the link on Memorial School’s website, under “Specials”! Please don’t hesitate to reach out with thoughts or questions at smaldonado@easthamptonct.org. I would love to hear from you!

News from the Art Room
Welcome back to a new school year, filled with new potential, and exciting opportunities to create beautiful works of art together!
We have been practicing self-regulation skills in the art room, as part of a school wide initiative. I have created a "relaxation resort" that is designated for students to use when they feel they need a "break". This practice is teaching them to calm down and use a more proactive approach with their behavior and helps them to recognize and validate their feelings in appropriate ways. Check out the pictures I have included in this newsletter to see different choices students have in this special space in the art room!
For the month of September, we have been busy introducing routines and expectations. We also began our very first masterpieces! SELF PORTRAITS! We observed how famous artists Vincent Van Gogh and Leonardo Da Vinci created portraits, and how styles of art can be very different. Taking time to compare art works can make us notice their unique and special qualities. All of the students also enjoyed trying to figure out which work of art was older! We have been practicing using our listening skills to follow directions and learn how to complete our art helper jobs. I already am seeing amazing work from all of our students and we have only had TWO art classes each! Wow!
I look forward to seeing families during the upcoming "Share Our School" event in a few weeks, and want you to know that my door is always open and I encourage you to ask questions and communicate with me any time. The best way to reach me is via email or phone! If you are interested in stopping in to visit or volunteer, please email or call me in advance to schedule a day and time. I will happily welcome volunteers and visitors! Enjoy the beauty as we transition into Autumn, my favorite time of the year!

News from the Library
The year is off to a great start in the Memorial School Library Media Center! This year we will continue to integrate technology and 21st century information literacy skills into your student’s library experience. We will be using our library time to explore, create, and develop critical thinking and research skills, in addition to fostering a love of reading, in a fun and welcoming environment.
During the month of September students will be establishing library routines and norms. Students in grades preK, K and 1 are busy learning about proper book care, the parts of a book and the roles of the author and illustrator. They have also participated in read a-louds with the theme of school and library.
Students in grades 2 and 3 are reviewing library expectations and basic library skills and tools with a fun game, “QR code tic tac toe”. They will be discussing how to choose a “just right book” and will review using the Chromebooks.
You may search our library collection, online at http://easthamptonpsct.booksys.net/opac/memorial/. Students will be learning how to use/reviewing the catalog in the coming weeks.
Book Check out:
Students have begun book checkout during their library period this week. Students are permitted to have one book checked out at a time and books are due back the following week on library day. Students may renew a book as long as no one is waiting for it. We recommend that students keep a plastic shopping bag in their backpack to keep their book in, to protect from spills and damage.
This year we will be running our “Star Reading Program”, as in years past. “Star Reader Week” happens every six weeks and rewards students who have returned their library books, by allowing them to check out two books that week.
Students are encouraged to mindfully select books that are appropriate for their reading level. However your student may bring home a book that needs to be read with an adult. This is also encouraged and an important part of their reading development.
You can find more information on our library web page located on the school website (http://easthamptonps.org) or by following us on Twitter @EHk5libraries.
