Principal's Office

Hello, all!

Here is our Roadrunner Weekly for the week of March 4th through March 8th. What a great week we had in Roadrunner Country! 30 of our kids were reclassified as fluent English proficient; we celebrated our Perfect Attendance kids from trimester 2; our GATE Destination Imagination teams qualified for the state finals; and we just completed an amazing "Read Across America"! Special thanks to Ms. Swesey and all of the other teachers who worked with her to make "Read Across America" week so fun for our kids! Remember, reading and attendance at school are the two most important things your kids can do to promote academic success!

And speaking of attendance, we've had a lot of students out with various illnesses over the past few weeks. While we appreciate everyone's cautiousness, I did want to remind folks that unless your child has had a fever of a 100 degrees or more or has been throwing up within the previous 24 hours, we strongly encourage your child to be at school. If they continue to feel really crummy, we'll send them home. Nothing can make up for actually being at school!

Please continue to visit our teacher websites regularly to keep current on homework assignments, weekly projects, and events. Also, i-Ready is an important at home skill-building tool, so please encourage your child to continue using it for 45 minutes or more per subject, per week to stay sharp on their math and ELA skills.

Have a great!

Mr. Cubias

"Roadrunners in Action" - "Read Across America" Week Fun!

Congratulations to Our FSS "Destination Imagination" Teams!

Each year, Destination Imagination works with educators and industry experts to develop seven, new academic Challenges in the fields of STEM, the arts, social entrepreneurship and early learning (Rising Stars!). Students work in teams to research, design and build a solution to their preferred Challenge. In solving a Challenge, they learn the creative process—a powerful learning tool that helps students assess problems, reflect on their progress, learn from failure and turn their original ideas into reality. Students who participate in the Challenge Program have the opportunity to present their solutions at a local tournament and if they qualify at the state level, they’re invited to participate in Global Finals, our culminating international tournament that celebrates student creativity.

At the regional competition that just took place this past weekend, The 4th & 5th grade DI Team won first place in the Region One Tournament. They are headed to the state competition in Clovis on April 6th. The 3rd grade team tied for third place. They are headed to states, too! Go, Roadrunners! Some images from the competition are below...

Trimester 2 Perfect Attendance Kids!

Our Rockstar Reclassified Roadrunners!

Each year, English Language Learners take a test called the ELPAC which assess their proficiency in English. It measure proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. When they pass all four areas, they are designated as "reclassified" as fluent in English, and most are also fluent in their native language. Data shows that our reclassified students score higher than any other group on the end of the year national SBAC academic test. This year, First St. had about 30 students reclassified! Great job, Roadrunners!!
