PEGA-SIS Spring Newsletter
Vol. 1 | Issue 2 (May 2017)
Letter from the Chair
The sun is beginning to show its face, students are donning their caps and gowns, and summer associates and judicial clerks are about to arrive in firms and chambers across the nation. That is right- unbelievably, summer is around the corner! For many of us summer is a time of planning- whether it be planning for an influx of summer help, planning for fall coursework, or planning for conference. As we, all begin to switch seasonal gears I hope this issue offers up some helpful insights.
In March, PEGA sponsored an AALL webinar on strategic planning for your career. Be sure to check out inncoming Chair Deborah Schander’s insightful thoughts on the webinar topic. She discusses how we can, both as individuals and as an SIS, keep moving forward with the concept of using strategic planning to inform and guide our personal goals. If you did not have a chance to attend our webinar last month, you can view it here.
If you are using the summer to think work on scholarships then do not forget to sign-up for Beer & Edits. Just like last year, B&E participants will have the added opportunity to submit and review materials in order to provide even better scholarly connections. Even if you do not have time to review or submit materials, please check out B&E for a chance to connect with like-minded colleagues with whom you can discuss ideas and futures projects.
For some big picture career planning, take a minute to review Ask PEGA for some new advice from our mentor pool. This month they fielded some excellent questions about the job search process- from both sides of the table! And, of course, don’t forget you can always anonymously submit your questions to Ask PEGA too! To that end, be sure to check out the great comments and advice from Adriana Mark in this month’s Show us Your Shelfie feature.
In our next issue we will talk a lot about conference opportunities and what to expect and plan for in Austin. Until then, start sharing with us what you are doing to plan for conference by participating in our second annual PEGA Prep contest! Tweet or Facebook out pictures of how you prep for conference and earn a chance to win! Be sure to tag them with the #PEGAPREP17 hashtag.
Cheers!

Personal Strategic Planning: Creating a Vision-Driven Career
PEGA-SIS sponsored its first webinar for AALL on March 29. Personal Strategic Planning: Creating a Vision-Driven Career was presented by Leo Lo, Associate University Librarian at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA.
In the webinar, Leo opened with an eye-opening statistic: of 553 librarians he surveyed, 44% of them had set New Year’s resolutions for the previous year – and of that group, 73% of them did not accomplish those resolutions. In an even more eye-opening set of results, of 371 librarians surveyed later, only 11% had a personal vision statement for their careers. In the webinar, Leo chronicled his own journey to making prudent, strategic choices about his life, from quitting smoking to crafting a 45 By 45 Project. He also offered suggestions to how the rest of us can move from a fixed to a growth mindset, build career capital, and be more engaged in the paths our lives and careers take.
This webinar fits right in with PEGA’s own mission. We exist to help our members and others become active members of the law library profession – and we as a profession benefit when we have thoughtful, engaged, and enthusiastic librarians who make strategic plans for their careers. If you missed the webinar, we invite you to view the recording on AALLNET.
And as a final thought, we’re hoping this webinar encouraged you to think about creating your own personal strategic plan. Whether you want to do a one-off activity or create something like your own 45 By 45 project, we want to hear about it! And we want to support you in that effort. We’ll be creating a space for people to talk about these activities. Keep an eye on your inbox for more details.
