PRIS Newsletter
April 10, 2015
From Our Director:
Hello Everyone,
Welcome back after what I hope has been a wonderful Spring Break with your family. Students and teachers all returned to school on Monday full of stories of their adventures and experiences, both here in Indonesia or further afield. With Spring Break behind us our focus now is on our final 10 weeks and having all our students finish the year achieving their very best.
Administratively over the next several weeks we will be developing our schedule for next year as well as our class sections. To assist in our planning if you have a child who will be joining our school community next year please let us know and complete an application as soon as possible. In addition, if you know that your family will not be returning to PRIS in August 2015, or if at this point it is a possibility, please contact our office to inform us of your transition plans.
This past Monday, Session 3 of our ASA program began. There are some super activities on offer, from tennis to talent club; crafts to robotics there is something of interest for everyone. It is terrific to see so many of our students signed up and participating in ASA’s. I would like to extend a “Big Thanks” to both Tifani for coordinating and to all our ASA sponsors for offering their time and talents in such wonderful array of activities. Super Job Everyone. Terima Kasih Banyak!
We have a number of items on the calendar for coming weeks. Keep up to date by viewing our calendar on the front page of our website. Pasirridgeinternationalschool.com
Best wishes for a terrific weekend.
Cheers

Wednesday, April 15th 6:30-8:00
Let’s Be Friends:
Developing positive social and emotional skills for healthy relationships.
Please RSVP by Monday, April 13 4:00 PM
“As parents, we all want our children to be healthy and happy. It’s easier to tell if your child is developing physically, but do you know if your child is developing the appropriate social and emotional skills? Supporting their emotional and social development is just as important as supporting their physical development”. (http://dmh.mo.gov/stopandplay/parents/social-emotional-development.html)
Please consider attending the Health Matters PRIS Parent Workshop and engage in thoughtful dialogue and activities that provide skills and tools for immediate implementation to help support your child/ren.

The PRIS Difference...Your Child Is Worth It!
Counselor's Corner - Honesty is the best policy!
Parents play a primary role in helping children develop honesty and have quite a bit of influence on instilling positive values. "All children lie. Teaching children about the importance of honesty early and teaching them how to resolve situations so they don't need to rely on lying will ensure they will be honest -- most of the time," says Victoria Talwar, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology at McGill University in Montreal. According to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, children and adults lie for similar reasons: to get out of trouble, for personal gain, to impress or protect someone, or to be polite.
Children experiment with the truth in varying degrees depending on the developmental stage a child is in. Parents are encouraged to address the subject of lying in an age-appropriate manner. There is much to gain for children when a mistake is made if a correction can occur.

PRIS Wellness TRYathlon
The key is “TRY”!
Thank you to everyone that volunteered time or resources!
Despite the inclement weather, over 40 students participated in the PRIS Wellness TRYathlon! Congratulations to everyone. The TRYathlon was successful in many ways. There were signs of transfer of learning; when children practice skills outside of class, children tend to learn faster and imprint the learning in their brain. The TRYathlon provided an opportunity for positive risk taking. “Parenting experts say that children who are encouraged to take reasonable, safe risks — with the guidance and support of their parents as they leave their comfort zone — tend to grow in confidence, are willing to make mistakes and use each failure as an education”.
"Teaching children the skill of reaching and risking happens similarly to most life skills we impart to them — by modeling the behavior, talking about it and giving them lots of opportunities for both success and failure," says Dr. Deborah Gilboa, clinical assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, a parenting speaker and mother of four. "When parents and mentors look for examples of bravery and initiative and label those as 'positive risk taking,' it gives kids the chance to think about what positive risk taking means.
"Conversation and thought will help children and teens identify more of these opportunities. When we admire this behavior and name it — in them, ourselves, others — we set this up as a model for our children to follow. Kids are building lifelong habits."
