November 2022
Busses are Rolling as Fieldwork Begins!
As a student, you may have gone on a "Field Trip," a fun excursion or experience. As an EL Education Partner, Fieldwork is an important part of the meaningful and authentic work that students are doing. By engaging in Fieldwork, students take on the work of the discipline. They use the research tools and methods of inquiry For example, if students are studying birds, they practice ornithology by observing birds in their habitat, writing notes and creating scientific drawings. We are still growing in planning for meaningful fieldwork, but we are excited to get started!
On Friday, November 11th, 2nd graders went to Dinosaur Ridge in connection with their learning about fossils and paleontology! Students learned about the ocean that used to be in Colorado, and why so many dinosaurs lived on the shore of that ocean. They saw tracks and learned what they could be. Students also participated in a "dinosaur dig" where they practiced uncovering fossils, making observations and making inferences.
See the "Upcoming Dates" section to learn about other Fieldwork opportunities coming up! Our goal is that all grade levels participate in at least one off-campus Fieldwork experience this year. We also are looking to bring experts in to school to enhance learning. If you have skills or experience to share, please email Courtenay Hammond, our Instructional Guide, at hammondc@mapleton.us!

Habits of Character
- Perseverance
- Accountability
- Integrity
- Advocacy
- Compassion
Students who demonstrate excellence with one or more of these habits can be nominated as a Leader of the Pack! Students can also be recognized on the announcements for demonstrating the habits as part of our "Pack Praise." At home, talk with your student about ways they show these habits in their lives outside of school. Or consider asking, "How did you show perseverance at school today?" instead of the typical "How was your day?" question. As Ms. Vue reminds us on the announcements daily, "Together, we are becoming ethical people and effective learners who are working to contribute to a better world."
