Weekly Update from IRE 003

January 14, 2016

We had another great week at school. The class worked together to write much of this weekly update. We hope you enjoy learning about our week!

Writers Make Plans

In writing, we are learning about different ways writers plan their writing. Although there is time to free write without a plan, we know that our best writing happens when we make a plan. This week, Mrs. Schwanke came in to teach us about different ways that she plans her writing. Some of us tried her strategies during Writing Workshop this week.

#Edcamp Kids

We had our third EdCampKids today! We work with a few other 3rd grade classrooms every few weeks for this event. This runs like a min-conference with sessions created and run by students. Students get a schedule of sessions and choose to go to 4 during each #EdCampKids. Today, kids had the choice to learn about NBA Players, Walter Payton, Idioms, Cats, iPhones, Drawing and more. This gives kids the opportunity to share things they are interested in, to learn from others, to share with others and to work with different presentation tools. This is a fun time filled with lots of learning around student interests. It was a fun way to end the week! (The photo here shows the excitement when students are choosing their sessions from all of the sessions offered!)

Dublin Literacy Conference Family Sessions

On February 20, 2016, Dublin City Schools hosts a literacy conference for area teachers. As part of this conference, we offer two sessions for families. Children's author, Amy Ludwig VanDerwater will be hosting a session called "Writing Together" from 9:00-10:00 am at Dublin Coffman High School. And from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Kristin Ziemke will conduct a family session titled "Kids Questions Matter: Fostering Digital Curiosity At Home." I have heard both speakers and they are both fabulous. I would highly recommend both sessions for you and your child if you are free that day. If you are interested, you can register online at http://goo.gl/forms/wjqWqj5l7Z . Sessions are free and limited to the first 100 participants.

Parent Conferences

We have a conference night coming up onFebruary 11, 2016. At this point in the year, we are conferencing with families that need an update on student progress or with parents that I have not yet met with. If I feel that a conference is necessary in February, I will contact you soon. If I do not feel that a conference is needed, but you have questions and concerns and would like to meet, please email me before January 30 to set up a time to meet. Please know that we WILL be having student-lead conferences later in the spring for all families. There will be details coming home about this at a later date.
