All Things E.Q.
Hello Parents,
This week the focus is on resiliency. When students can bounce back from adversity, they become stronger and more resourceful people.
One way to help our kids bounce back more quickly is to understand that challenges are normal. Too often students believe they are the only ones who struggle. It's an easy assumption to make because we humans don't often share our struggles. We often feel shame around our struggles, which is sad because we all have tough times and it takes some of the sting out when we realize we are not the only ones who go through difficulties. After all, falling doesn't measure our worth; it's our ability to get back up again that counts.
The motto in class this week is:
Tough times happen, but I'm tougher.
When we notice our child is going through a difficult time, it's natural for us to feel sad or upset as well. After all, we care for them and don't like seeing them hurt. However, sometimes our concern can compound the problem.
Some of the best parenting advice I ever received was from one of our teenage babysitters who lived in our neighborhood. I saw her outside as I was coming home from work, looking upset. I asked her, "What's going on?"
She replied that she had a tough day because her friend did not invite her to a party. I immediately felt bad for her and just as I started to say I'm sorry, she shared some great advice. She told me that she could handle it, but what made it harder was how sad and upset her mom was about the situation. She told me how she felt embarrassed at school and now she felt sad and ashamed at home too. Then she said, if this happens to your kids, just don't make it a big deal.
I understood where her mom was coming from, when it comes to our kids, we all wear our hearts on our sleeve. However, this was a great reminder for me to make sure I normalized the fact that we all will have to face negative experiences from time to time. When we know that bad times happen to everyone and not just us, it stings a little bit less.
Sometimes the best thing we can do for our kids when they tell us about a bad experience is to share with them one of ours and to let them know that yes, bad times happen (to all of us), but they are temporary and they will get through it. Just like they have before, just like you have and just like you both will in the future.
Best to you,
Danna Evans
