Twitter Basics for Teachers
How to navigate the Twitterverse with ease:)
Why should I use Twitter? What is all the fuss about?
Creating your Twitter Handle
- Choose a user name that people can associate with - much easier to share/find
- Don't make your user name too long (stick to 12 characters or less)
- Choose a profile photo - don't leave it blank!
- Describe who you are in your profile
- Share what you do (ECE teacher, 5th grade ELA teacher, MS principal, etc)
- Reference your district, school, professional organization in your description - you'll be easier to find in searches
- List a hashtag or two in your profile if you use them often (#JCPSDL, #JCPSChat, #WeAreJCPS, etc.)
- List your blog or website if you have one

How to Interact with Another User
- To like someone's tweet, click the heart symbol.
- To retweet someone's tweet, click the double arrow symbol.
- To reply to someone's tweet, click the single arrow symbol.
- To follow a user, hover over or click on their name and click on the follow symbol.
How to Tweet
- Tag users (people) by using their handles (@username)
- Use hashtags (topics) by using the # - you must use the correct one to show up in that search
- If you are going to copy a link, shorten it first. Bit.ly is a free link shortener
- Don't mention yourself (by using your own username) in your Tweets - it's a definite turnoff!!!
- Don't tag several people at the end of a tweet just because you have room
#JCPSChat - Our monthly chat - It's a big deal:)
#JCPSChat takes place at 8pm ET on the third Monday of each month.
It has become the largest district level educhat on Twitter in less than two years.
For each #JCPSChat, we collaborate with eduleaders from around the district, KY and the nation to create questions built around a centralized theme to help support the educators of our JCPS by connecting them in pedagogical dialogue that lasts long after the chat ends.
You can search for ALL tweets from our chats by entering #JCPSChat in the search bar (remember to hit LATEST when search results come up). You can add your thoughts to #JCPSChat by making sure you include it in your tweets!
