My Position Paper On My Topic: Limiting Student Speech in School Newspapers
Some of the reasons why they should limit the freedom of press, is because, sometimes it can offend students in some articles of some school papers. Also, sometimes it can embarrass other people. These papers could also influence kid’s behavior to do wrong things. For example, an article on a kid beating another kid at recess could go through the reader’s mind, and the reader will want to do exactly what the article was about. In other words, an article about a kid doing the wrong thing could influence other students and their peers to do the same. Many schools will think that allowing freedom of the press is a good thing for these reasons. First of all, they think that students should be able to express their opinions for everyone to see. Also, students should be able to have the freedom to write about any event or occasion that may excite them. Finally, students should be able to form clubs that involve public speaking announcements for the school to hear.
Although there are some positives in allowing freedom of the press in schools, there are more positives that come out of limiting it than the positives that come out of allowing it. You may still be thinking that you should keep the freedom of the press in schools, but think of the cons that come along with it. Remember, if you limit the freedom of the press, you will get a better secured school with less safety issues to have to worry about. So I suggest that we all put more limits, and fewer risks. This will make a better society for all of us~ Israel Ramirez 11/12/13
