ID Badges
ALL students must be wearing their ID and it should be visible at all times. Whether it be their school ID on a lanyard OR a temporary ID (sticker) badge, it MUST be worn.
If a student has lost their ID Badge, please replace it in the front office (it does cost money to replace an ID Badge).
If a student has forgotten their ID Badge, the consequence is last in line at lunch and no Snack Bar.
NEW
Students will be charged for an extensive number of temporary badges! Please be sure to use and wear your issued ID Badge.
Cell Phone Policy
Cell phones are SHUT DOWN and PUT AWAY from 7:30a - 2:20p
- Student are expected to follow EPS expectations for cell phone use.
- There is a progressive plan if students are using their cell phone during the school day.
- If cell phone usage becomes habitual, it can lead to a parent picking up their cell phone in the Front Office.
Science
Hello Thunderhawks!
This week, we have been continuing to learn about how thermal energy is transferred. Students conducted a lab to see how the substance being used can affect how thermal energy is transferred. We then reviewed the data we have collected over the last several labs so we could better analyze our results and use them to draw conclusions.
Next week students will delve into the three types of thermal energy transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation. This will be especially important knowledge for them to have because the following week we will begin our in-class project creating an igloo for an ice cube penguin! More information will be coming out about this project.
English
Hello Thunderhawks!
We are in the process of wrapping up our lessons in which we compared biographies and autobiographies/memoirs. This past week has been a busy week in English, as we have had two summative assessment grades. One of the scores was a writing assignment to assess midpoint progress of the RACE writing strategy; the other was a comprehension check over the biography and memoir we read last week. As we continue to move through our “Decisions That Matter” unit, we will begin to explore primary and secondary sources in relation to United Flight 93.

Literacy
Literacy is continuing reading the books each student selected for the independent book project. Ask your student(s) about their books! We are reading each day in class and all students know how many pages each day they need to read to complete the book by October 7th. Some students may need to read at home if they fall behind in class. Check in with your student(s) to find out.

6th Grade Math
This week we continued with Unit 2. We worked on GCF/LCM word problems. We also did math stations to help practice our GCF and LCM skills. Next week we will finish up Unit 2 by taking our Unit 2 test Monday.
Need Help in Math? Here’s what you can do:
Come see your math teacher during pre-advisory (7:10-7:40)
Come do a working lunch. (There is always 1 math teacher available during that time to offer help).
6th Grade IA Pre-Algebra
This week we learned how to convert terminating and repeating decimals to fraction, as well as multiply and divide decimals. Next week we will continue working with rational numbers and do some interesting investigations on Discovery Ed.

Geography
Hello Thunderhawk families! Our students are progressing quite well through our Chapter 3 Unit of Geography. This week, students will learn about what creates an area’s culture and the different types of government. As students study these things, we encourage them to look at what makes up their own individual culture and how they can be involved in their country’s form of government! A quick reminder for some of our students, please make sure your student is keeping up with their Geography notebook and updating their Table of Contents.

Message from 6th Grade Principal
Hello Thunderhawk Families:
What another busy, but great week we had here at Heartland. Students dressed up and participated in PINK OUT all week to raise awareness for Breast Cancer.
Mrs. Britton’s class won our “Think Before You Post” door decorating contest. I love how much our students got involved with this. I’d like to take this moment to encourage parents to have these same conversations with their kiddos regularly.
“Words can inspire and words can destroy. Choose yours well.” -Robin Sharma
Friday, we had Fun Food Friday and a great time with Beats by Brook’s again in the courtyard.
On the agenda for next week: we have a resiliency survey that students will be taking on Thursday through their Advisory. Information regarding this has gone out to parents. Please check your email for more information.
As we near the end of the quarter, students will need to have all missing assignments turned in. Teachers have worked very hard to put together a fun incentive for students to have all missing assignments in. It includes donuts and bingo!
As always, please never hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns.
Kind Regards,
Laura Brown
