Popular Sovereignty

Definition: a government in which the people rule.

How principle is reflected in the constitution: " We the people of the United States..... establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Example: When slavery still existed, different colonies had different opinions so, they let each colony decide if they wanted slavery or not.

Repubicanism

Definition: People exercise their power by voting for their political representaives.

How principle is reflected in the constitution: constitution also calls for every state to have a "republican form of government."

Example: When the people vote for president.

Federalism

Definition: A system of government in which power is divided between a central government and smaller political units.

How principle is reflected in the constitution: The constitution assigns certain powers to the national government those are delegated powers. Powers reserved by the states are reserved powers. And powers shared by both are concurrent powers.

Example: The United States. The Federal level is composed of the President, the Congress and, the Supreme Court.

Separation of Powers

Definition: The division of basic government roles into branches.

How principle is reflected in the constitution: In article 1- Legislative Branch congress makes the laws. Article 2 - Executive Branch President enforces the laws. Article 3 - Judical Branch supreme court intercepts the law.

Example: how the president can veto and the government can abolish laws.

Checks and Balances

Definition: Each branch of government can exercise checks, or controls , over the other branches.

How principle is reflected in the constitution: Framers included a system of checks and balances in the constitution to help make sure that the branches work together.

Example: One branch of government cant just make a law the other branches have to agree.

Limited Government

Definition: Everyone, citizens and powerful leaders alike, must obey the law.

How principle is reflected in the constitution: the constitution lists the powers denied to the congress and, forbids the states to take certain actions.

Example: The president has limited power there are certain things he cant do.

Individual Rights

Definition: Personal liberties and privileges.

How principle is reflected in the constitution: The first 10 amendments to the constitution shield people from an overly powerful government.

Example: Your freedom of speech, your freedom of religion, etc..
