The Ely Happening

March, 2022

A Message From Mr. Easton

Dear Ely Families,

Well it appears that we are starting finally to warm up. We have had an interesting couple of weather months here in Northeast Ohio. I hope that everyone is staying safe and healthy as we continue to move forward in 2022.

Our students and teachers have been working extremely hard this past month. During the month of February we celebrated Black History Month. Talk to your child about some of the activities that they participated in to celebrate Black History Month. In addition, we were able to celebrate Valentine's Day at Ely. I want to give a huge shout out to our Ely Pride Parent Group who donated cupcakes and stickers to every single classroom at Ely. Our 4th grade students enjoyed Popcorn and a Movie as a reward by winning the Attendance Wars Challenge at Ely. Finally, during February we were able to celebrate the hard work of many of our students during our 2nd quarter awards assemblies.

Over the month of March are students will be busy learning and growing academically. During March our 3rd and 4th graders will be taking the OST (Ohio State Test) to show what they have learned during this school year. Also, at the end of the month we will be ending our 3rd quarter grading period. Please make sure to regularly check your child's grades in PowerSchool. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's progress or grades please reach out to your child.

Thank you for your continued support for helping to make sure that this is an Amazing Year. As always I encourage you to reach out if you ever have any questions or concerns.

Test Taking Tips for Parents & Students:

Preparing your child for an upcoming test tips:

1. Make sure your child gets an ample, normal amount of sleep the night before the test

2. Mark testing days on your calendar to help remind you and your child when the testing will take place and plan your preparations.

3. The student should eat a nutritious and filling breakfast. Avoid high sugar cereals which can make the student hyper and/or unfocused.

4. Make sure the student is on time on the day of testing

5. Set a backup alarm to avoid the possibility of oversleeping

6. If you child is sick please contact the school immediately to inform them

Working with students who are anxious about testing:

1. Try not to put too much pressure on the student. Reinforce that as long as they worked hard in preparation and did their absolute best you will be proud of them.

2. Have the child visualize success. Encourage them to rehearse what it will feel like to get a good score on the test.

3. Work with them to focus on breathing. Stress is often caused by insufficient oxygen to the brain. Work with the student to take time before the test begins to take a number of deep, cleansing breaths, exhaling slowly. Focusing on breathing by taking some time when stress levels rise helps to focus the mind during testing.

4. Try to use positive language when talking about expectations of the test. Do not overinflate the student’s expectations but also try to avoid negative wording (e.g. replace “you are going to fail this test if you don’t study” with “if you don’t study you aren’t going to pass this test.”)

5. Keep a positive attitude about testing in general around your child and emphasize their ability to demonstrate what they have learned rather than the consequences of not passing

Arrival

STUDENTS SHOULD NOT BE DROPPED OFF AT THE SCHOOL PRIOR TO 8:55!!

  • Parents please make sure you are pulling all the way forward in the morning
  • Your child can exit the vehicle anywhere along the sidewalk
  • Please note that the tardy bell rings at 9:10. Any child being dropped off after this time their parent will need to sign them in the front office.
  • Please turn right out of the parking lot during the indicated times on the sign to help with traffic in the car loop.
  • Please do not park in the small loop-this loop is for daycare and busses only.
  • Parent please only have your child get out of your vehicle on the passenger side. They should not be getting on the drivers side as this can cause a safety concern

Dismissal

Car Rider:

Any parent/guardian picking up a student in the car rider line will need to make sure that their car rider tag is visible in the car. Please note that the purpose for this car rider tag is to ensure a safe and smooth dismissal at Ely. Parents please make sure that you are leaving your car rider tag up in the car till your child gets into the car.

Please see below for a few reminders:

  • Please make sure you are pulling all the way forward
  • Please try to avoid backing up traffic on Ohio Street and Gulf. You may use the smaller parking lot located closest to Gulf (American Legion).
  • Please stay in your car. If you do need to get out of your car to help your child, please use a parking spot
  • Please have your child load and unload on the curbside of the school (passenger side of car) for your child's safety
  • Please do not park in the bus/day care rider loop. You may use the provided parking spaces.
  • Please turn right out of the parking lot during the indicated times on the sign to help with traffic in the car loop.

Important Information for Visiting Ely

The Main Office of any school building is a hub of activity. Students and staff are always on the go, in and out of the space throughout the school day.

It’s an active place for regular check-ins and meetings with students, as well as staff conferences and daily interactions with school principals and counselors. The Main Office is also a confidential space at times for conversations and interactions between school personnel and students.

Parents and caregivers are part of the equation, too. For any number of reasons, parents may be asked to come to their child’s school during the day. When that happens, parents should follow the district’s visitor procedures by using the school’s main entrance buzzer and intercom system to gain entrance to the school, and then signing in at the front desk.

If parents/caregivers do not have a meeting at the school but still need to come to the school during the day to see their child or to speak to a staff member, call-ahead notice or an appointment is required. This ensures parents will be seen in a timely manner and upholds the safety practices of the school. To contact the Main Office, please call 440-284-8005.
