News and Notes about #BeBCMS-Issue #3- 2018
January News and Notes
Thank you for working hard on increasing the DOK level on your instructional objectives! I thought our Learning with Liz Pop UP PL went AWESOME on Tuesday and I am excited to see how that focus will translate into your classrooms and your learning environments!
Learning with Liz this week will focus on our work with GLRS as we build capacity in our co-teaching, co-planning, and co-assessing for our students with disabilities!
Thank you to everyone who has covered! I know this time of year is difficult with covering and pitching it for everyone! I appreciate your willingness to help out and keep the main thing the main thing: Our Scholars!
TKES conferences are wrapped up and hiring season is upon us! We will be hiring ELITE teachers in ELA and Math. Please let me know if you have any strong candidates that you feel would be amazing additions to our BCMS Family!
As a reminder, The Innovation Center classes are Wednesday morning. Here are the assignments:
Engaging Students in Lesson and Classroom Designs: Parent Resource Room
Setting and Maintaining High Behavior Expectations: Ms. Swindell's Room
Challenging Student to think critically: Ms. Waddell's Room
The week of February 5th we need Social Studies classes to take the Georgia Health Survey. Please plan on using one day of instruction for this assessment. Ms. Swindell will be sending out more information next week.
Still have questions or thoughts? PLEASE take time to fill this out. I would love for you to take some time to fill out this form to prepare for our Learning with Liz on Tuesdays. What questions do you have for me? What can I help clarify or understand? Fill this form out and I will make sure to get all your questions answered!

Thank you for building awesome relationships with our scholars and their families. If you have a parent requesting to visit and observe, we have a process for that. There should never be an adult in the building that the Administration team is unaware of.

Focus on..... The Instructional Objectives
I loved our learning on increasing the DOK of our Instructional Objectives.
Remember: Depth of Knowledge is less about verbs and more about critical thinking!
DOK 1: Memorize(factual knowledge)
DOK 2: Thinking (procedural knowledge)
DOK 3: Strategic Thinking (strategic knowledge)
DOK 4: NEW Thinking (extended knowledge)
Also, please make sure all lesson designs are updated in your collaborative team folder. A lesson plans are due (HARD COPY) in the folder on your way out of the building Friday.
We are looking at the Instructional Framework and the use of the Instructional Objectives.
QUICK REVIEW of our instructional strategies 1-4
1. Instructional Objective: Have it visual, aligned, and reference it
2. Suffix/Root Words/Prefix: Have them visual and accessible. Model use
3. Gradual Release: I do, we do together, we do collaboratively, you do. How are you using this in your teaching?
4. Types of Text: How are you using both informational text and literary text
Remember:
1. Collaborative Planning is made up of three buckets:
- Lesson Designs
- PLCs
- Data Analysis / Digging
Learning with Liz times:
7th grade 8:45-9:15
6th grade 11:45-12:15
8th grade 2:00-2:30
Check out this lesson design template: (make a copy first) https://docs.google.com/a/bryan.k12.ga.us/document/d/1YGAYfD7wP-xieqvJk0PXu7CXLgonm7JfSTQAuTpWOKY/edit?usp=sharing
a. Come to School- BE AMAZING- Go Home! Repeat
b. Bell to Bell instruction
c. ALL instruction/teaching will be on grade level and standards based
d. Take a STAND for teaching and learning. Get up!
Think Abouts?
1. Where are your team notes located?
2. How are you using agenda/minutes to drive collaborative conversations
3. Are you special education teachers joining your content meetings
4. What kind of differentiation are you providing for your scholars?
5. What does co-planning look like with your special education teachers?

What I'm Reading....
#BooksForDay
#MomentMakers
In the Power of Moments, one of the four types of moment is INSIGHT. When we stretch for insight, we see that we are more capable of things then we ever thought we would be. Stretching is not promised success, but it is promised learning. It is self-insight and self-reflection. When we stretch for insight, we ask ourselves very powerful questions such as "what do we want? what can we do? who can we be? what can we endure?"
When we think about those answers, we can make sure we are creating powerful moments for ourselves and all of those around us, including the scholars we serve.

"If risks always paid off, they wouldn't be risks."

When homework (or other activities) are assigned, we have to really ask ourselves ...
Does that assignment show learning or compliance?
How much learning is REALLY coming out of that?

Using your DATA- Sub-Group Style
The expectations for WIN are clear and consistent. Our focus on LITERACY across the schoolhouse continues. We will be using SRI to monitor progress.
If you want to use a different tool, see me and we will work to create one on Performance Matters or USA Test Prep. If you are using other data to show progress monitoring other than MAP, please talk to KAT and I. :)
Data
D:Discuss
U:Understand
M:MAKE
P:Plans
Now that you have looked at your Quadrant data of your classes, let's look at sub-group data.
With each sub-group: WHITE, BLACK, HISPANIC, F/R, SWD begin to make lists of where scholars fall. Begin to look at those scholar who fall into 2 or 3 sub-groups, for example, Liz Raeburn- WHITE, F/R, and SWD
If you move Liz Raeburn, you have just moved a scholar in THREE buckets!
We love to look at data but we have to analyze it and own it! Our new DATA ROOM will be up and running before the end of the data Monday. Thank you for taking the time to do the data dumping and making sure you know where every single scholar lies on the achievement bands!
We will be working on owning this data during our collaborative planning meetings.
Black History Month BREAK OUT!
Dana sent out the sign up for the BREAKOUT sessions for Black History Month. Please see your team leaders to sign up. There is a space for every single class in the building!
