Thankful for Children... and Homework?
A while ago, a colleague shared a research article with me titled “Don’t Help Your Kids With Their Homework.” The title caught my eye both as someone in professional education, and as a parent of two children (see picture below) who are now young adults.
I recall countless evenings of helping my kids ‘review’ their homework, often times wondering ‘what is the point.’ It was often very challenging for me to not ‘just do it’ and move things along for them, even though I knew better. I knew that the struggle was as important as the content being taught. I knew from my formal teacher training that children learn as much, if not more, from struggling with concepts and being challenged, as they do by being given the ‘correct’ answer. Nonetheless, the temptation to jump in and ‘rescue’ my children was great. One strategy that seemed to help me find common ground in my own mind was to get my kids to step back a bit and ask questions about their homework. Such as:
“What didn’t they know and what did they know about the problem?”
“Why they thought the concept was being taught to them?”
“What if I just did their homework for them, what would really happen in their lives?”
To my surprise, teachers shared with me that children sometimes also asked similar questions of their teachers in the classroom. This led to interesting conversations, and more often than not, they completed their homework themselves and earned their own grades.
Based on my experience, I believe children need the love and understanding of parents to support them throughout life. The article referenced above, shared findings that indicate that one powerful type of parental involvement is when parents go to great lengths to seek out effective schools for their children, while others accept the status quo at the school around the corner. I know that RHLS parents have gone to great lengths to seek out RHLS as a school of choice for their child, this is a choice and form of parental involvement that will have lasting effects; eternally lasting effects.
As we approach Thanksgiving, I hope that we are all thankful for children and their homework. Thankful to have the opportunity to be challenged by both children and their homework. More so, thankful for a community of Christian believers here at Red Hill Lutheran Church and School who together form a foundation of support and encouragement to live for Christ each and every day.
God’s richest blessings on your family this Thankful Holiday Season!

November Christian Character Quality: Charity
Our November philanthropy is Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Collection. A new addition this year is the ability to purchase a virtual shoeboxes online for $25. Our goal this year is 800 boxes. Let's do this together to share the love of Christ with others around the world!
Red Hill Lutheran Church and School will once again be participating in collecting shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse through November 17th. The Samaritan’s Purse project Operation Christmas Child collects shoebox gifts‑filled with fun toys, school supplies and hygiene items—and delivers them to children in need around the world to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way. For many of these children, the gift—filled shoebox is the first gift they have ever received. Delivered into the hands of children through local churches, every shoebox gift is an opportunity to share about Jesus Christ and God’s love. You can help by packing a shoebox in one (or both) of two ways: you can pack a shoebox yourself or virtually. This year we have an option to purchase a shoebox online. You can pick age, items, and gender preference or let Samaritan’s Purse choose items for you. Check out this link: Build a Box with RHLS or stop by the school office to pick up a box. Thank you for your support.

Preschool Pumpkin Patch
"During the month of October, our Preschoolers were able to enjoy fun pumpkin themed activities at our annual Preschool Pumpkin Patch. The children took “hay” rides, played pumpkin themed games and enjoyed many fun pumpkin themed sensory activities.
We are so grateful for all of the pumpkin donations that the parents provided to make this fun event a success for the children in our program.
We would also like to thank our amazing maintenance staff for going above and beyond to sanitize the pumpkin patch in between each class visit to help maintain the health and safety of the children in our care.
Thank you God for Pumpkins!"
