Senior Letter from the State of Michigan regarding Financial Aid
Dear High School Senior:
As you complete your final year of high school and prepare for your postsecondary options, the following should be considered to maximize your opportunities for State of Michigan aid programs.
• Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). o A FAFSA is required each year to receive State aid, regardless of the program. The FAFSA must be submitted by March 1, 2021 to be considered on time for the Michigan Competitive Scholarship.
o The FAFSA can be completed at www.fafsa.gov.
• After your FAFSA is received, create a MiSSG Student Portal account at www.michigan.gov/missg to provide contact information and monitor your State financial aid status.
o Our office awards the first college/university listed on your FAFSA. If you decide to attend a different institution, please update this in the MiSSG Student Portal or call us at 1-888-447-2687.
• If you scored 1200 or higher on the SAT, you may qualify for the Michigan Competitive Scholarship (MCS). o For consideration of MCS, we need to associate your SAT score with your FAFSA. To complete this process, we need your Social Security number (SSN). Your SSN may already be in our system, but we recommend that you ask your high school counselor to check your information in the MiSSG High School Counselor Portal or you can call us at 1-888-447-2687 to check.
• Check to see if you qualify for the Tuition Incentive Program (TIP). o To check your TIP eligibility, create a MiSSG Student Portal account at www.michigan.gov/missg or call us at 1-888-447-2687. Please make sure your contact information is accurate and up-to-date.
o A separate application is not required for TIP; however, some colleges/universities have additional processes for TIP students. If you are TIP eligible, contact the financial aid office of the college/university that you plan on attending to learn about their process for TIP eligible students.
To learn more about our programs and resources, please visit www.michigan.gov/mistudentaid.
Sincerely,
Diann Cosme, Director Student Scholarships, Grants and Outreach Office of Postsecondary Financial Planning
Upcoming Virtual College Representative Visits
The list will be updated as we get more colleges signed up.
Some colleges do require you to register for this event ahead of time. This will be indicated in the meeting information section.
Dual Enrollment Process for Buying Books
Recommended process for purchasing books for the Winter 2021 semester is in-store shopping. We recommend that students return their Fall 2020 books at the time that they purchase their Winter 2021 books.
With COVID-19 protocols in place, both stores will have occupancy limitations. There will also be socially distant queuing lines designated in the buildings for students waiting to enter the bookstore. As a result, students may experience a longer wait time.
Fall 2020 textbook rentals are due on December 14th. Rental return and book buy back will be handled in a designated area within each of the bookstore locations.

Go Blue! (and Go Green too!)
From UM:
Though we may be rivals in sports, academics, and more, the University of Michigan and Michigan State University both agree that your students would be great additions to either school. That’s why we’re teaming up for Go Blue + Go Green in November. We’ve also sent an invitation to several of your students.
Go Blue + Go Green is an online event where you and your students will learn about the exceptional opportunities at the top public schools in the state of Michigan. Both schools will be covering topics such as academic programs and majors, scholarships and financial aid, the admissions process, campus life, and more.
- Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 3:30 p.m. ET

Freshmen
What can a freshman do to get ready for post-secondary education? Although it may seem like a long way away, it will be here before you know it. There are some steps freshmen can begin taking to get themselves ready for college, trade school or the military. This week we will focus on college. See below for some suggestions on how freshman can get ready to apply for college:
- Create an academic plan. Be sure to take college-level courses, challenge yourself by taking the hardest classes you can handle. Most importantly, GET GOOD GRADES. If there is a subject you are weak in access help now.
- Begin a college savings plan & discuss the family budget. Work and if possible, save half of everything earned.
- Start building your vocabulary. Read everything you can. Use new words when you talk and challenge yourself to learn new words every day.
- Hone your writing skills. Read comments on papers and seek advice.
- Stretch your comfort zone. Identify clubs, organizations, and groups to become active in and become a leader in areas of interest to you.
- Review the Federal Student Aid student checklist. Visit https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/prepare-for-college/checklists/9th-grade
- It is never too soon to start looking for scholarships. Visit our website: http://cvhsguidance.weebly.com/scholarships--financial-aid.html
